  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Word Origins number 10. The word origin today

  • is wardrobe malfunction. All right. Let's take a look at the note

  • here. A wardrobe malfunction is an occurrence when someone's clothes slips,

  • falls, rips, etc. exposing someone's private parts or causing indecent

  • exposure. We see this happen to celebrities very often to be honest the

  • far majority of time I think it's usually female celebrities is where it

  • happens most of the time. All right. Let's continue. The origin of the term occurred

  • in Super Bowl 38. The term was actually coined by the singer Justin Timberlake.

  • So he created it. He came up with this term and it makes you wonder did he just

  • think of it then or was this planned before time. I don't know, but anyway he coined

  • it. He was the first one to say this. To, to try to explain what happened after

  • there was backlash from the incident. While singing the line \"Gonna have you

  • naked by the end of this song, \" Justin Timberlake pulled at Janet Jackson's

  • bustier which they claimed was supposed to leave her red lace bra on but of

  • course one of her breasts was exposed. Okay. So now remember this during the Super

  • Bowl, so the reason there was backlash was because this is supposed to be a family

  • event. So it's supposed to be a lot of young kids there and if this really was

  • planned a lot of people think that this was really not suitable at a family

  • event. So that's why there was a lot of backlash to this and that's why they

  • came out with this term try to explain it like her, her breast was not supposed

  • to be exposed. We do find out that even though, it was exposed and you could see

  • the whole breast the very, very tip where the nipple is supposedly there was a

  • nipple guard So there was a little something just very covering the nipple.

  • Some people may question that too because do they normally wear that ? Is

  • that natural ? It seems like something that would you'd probably only put on

  • unless you were planning this event. So that's why sometimes people question

  • whether this was truly really an accident and truly really a wardrobe

  • malfunction. If some people wonder was the first wardrobe, the first wardrobe

  • malfunction the term was used for, was it really a wardrobe malfunction or was it

  • actually planned ? Or was it really more like a publicity stunt ? That's a good question,

  • All right. But anyway, let's go on. So and also it's you know with the song \" Gonna

  • have you naked by the end of this song. \" I don't know you, you it does make you

  • wonder whether this was truly just really an accident or was it a publicity

  • stunt. But anyway the most important part here

  • is this is where the term came from. So once they started using the term for

  • this one, then in in the future when their other wardrobe malfunctions

  • whether they were real or planned I don't know. The term has often been used

  • for that. So let's continue, All right. So thus the term wardrobe

  • malfunction was born. It means it was created. That was the first time and has been

  • used countless amounts of times ever since. Yeah. It's kind of surprising

  • exactly how many wardrobe malfunctions there are. So does it does it make you

  • wonder I mean have they just increased a lot in recent years or are they just

  • reporting about them more than they used to. I don't know I guess they're both

  • possible or some of them natural I would think probably at least some of them are

  • natural. Are some of them staged ? That's the question. Who knows ? Maybe yes. maybe

  • no. Okay let's continue. There have been so many wardrobe malfunctions. We do have

  • some other ways of calling them, such as a nip slip.

  • So remember nip is short for nipple, so especially if it's a female and somehow

  • her nipple got exposed that they may jokingly refer to it as a nip slip like

  • the nipple slipped out of the dress or whatever the top that

  • the woman was wearing. Ass slip, I guess you know, maybe your pants falls down for

  • some reason. It could be an ass slip etc . Let's continue here. Some famous stars who have

  • fallen victim to wardrobe malfunctions include Mariah Carey, Nicki

  • Minaj , Heidi Klum, Ann Hathaway , Jennifer Hudson, Katy Perry etc. and really there's

  • many, many more you could you could look up this. They're too many too,

  • many to count. Anyway, let me know what you think ? You

  • can leave it in the comments whether you think some of these are, do you think

  • some of them are actually staged or do you think that they're all really

  • natural as they are reported ? Anyway I hope you got it. I hope it's clear. Thank

  • you for your time. Bye-bye.
