2022 is shaping up to be another year fraught with challenges for the European Union with geopolitical tensions rising, so a phrase you will be hearing frequently is "strategic autonomy".
Welcome to this week’s news report. I'm Leila. CNN10 is on break for the quarter, so today we’re checking in with the German-produced global English-language news and information program, DW News, and their segment on 2022.
What challenges can the world expect in 2022?
As the world greets the new year, the United States and China continue to slip further into a new kind of cold war with Taiwan and Ukraine serving as flashpoints that could change the cold conflict into a hot one.
In Germany, the new chancellor, Olaf Scholz, has some heavy challenges to face immediately: salvaging a diplomatic route out of the Ukraine crisis, protecting his nation from the Omicron variant, and transforming Germany into a green economy while creating wealth at the same time.
Germany is not unique, though. Throughout the European Union, geopolitical tensions are rising and you can expect to hear the phrase “strategic autonomy” frequently in the coming year. In Brussels, that phrase refers to Europe’s desire to (A) produce more domestically instead of having to rely on China, and (B) defend itself without having to rely on the US and NATO. That means that in 2022, we may see Europe create an EU army as well as increase domestic manufacturing for products like semiconductors.
China has two big events ahead in 2022. The first is the Beijing Winter Olympics in February. The Chinese government has been promoting the Beijing Winter Olympics as a milestone for their country, but the West is still debating a political boycott of the Games considering the increasing human rights violations inside China.
In autumn, China will have its biggest political event of the year, the 20th Party Congress, during which Xi Jingping is expected to proclaim his third term in office. That would make him the longest-ruling leader since Mao Zedong.
Tensions have been rising between China and Taiwan, and considering Xi’s refusal to rule out military force to unify, those tensions don’t show any sign of easing in 2022. Starting from January, Taiwan is implementing new policies for its military reservists, asking them to train for 14 days every year, rather than 7 days every other year. After fostering relations with EU countries in 2021, Lithuania will open its representative office in Taiwan in early 2022. Taiwan will also hold local elections in November.
In America, things are no better for President Joe Biden. Indeed, as one DW reporter aptly points out, “It is one of the pitfalls of the US electoral system that the president is already in campaign mode after just one year in office.” The midterm elections on November 8th will determine how much power Biden has in the rest of his term.
On a global level, the United Nations is predicting that nearly 300 million people will need humanitarian aid this year. The majority of that number are Africans. Ethiopia, South Sudan, Nigeria, and countries in the Sahara face war, terrorism, hunger, climate change and more. Mali, Chad, Guinea, and Sudan are in danger of losing their democracies.
And now, our Sentence of the Day:
2022 is shaping up to be another year fraught with challenges for the European Union with geopolitical tensions rising, so a phrase you will be hearing frequently is "strategic autonomy". 2022 年對歐盟來說又是充滿挑戰的一年,隨著地緣政治的緊張局勢不斷加劇,「戰略自主」這個詞彙將更頻密地映入你我的眼簾。
Let’s look at some vocabulary from the sentence:
fraught KK /frɔt/ IPA /frɑːt/ Commonly used as “fraught with” full of unpleasant things such as problems or dangers 充滿(問題、危險等令人不快之物)的 i.e. Without a clear leader and a specific timeline to action, the project was fraught with troubles and setbacks. 由於沒有明確的領導者和具體的行動時間,該項目充滿了問題和挫折。
strategic KK /strəˋtidʒɪk/ IPA /strəˈtiː.dʒɪk/ helping to achieve a plan, for example in business or politics 有助於計劃成功的;戰略(性)的 i.e. For most people, poker is a good way to lose money, but Jett is such a strategic player that he’s been able to win thousands of dollars. 對於大多數人來說,玩撲克很容易賠錢,但 Jett 是一位非常有策略的玩家,以至於他能夠贏得數千美元。
autonomy KK /ɔˋtɑnəmɪ/ IPA /ɑːˈtɑː.nə.mi/ The first definition in the Cambridge Dictionary says this noun means: the right of an organization, country, or region to be independent and govern itself 自治,自治權 However, the countries within the EU are in fact independent of China and the US. The EU already governs itself. This means they are using “autonomy” according to the second definition: the ability to make your own decisions without being controlled by anyone else 自主,自主權 i.e. I appreciate everyone’s help while my leg is broken, but I still feel frustrated by the lack of autonomy. 我很感激大家在我腿斷掉的時候幫助,但我仍然對於沒有辦法自理感到沮喪。
Today's DW News video left me with some gray-area questions. Will 2022 be as challenging as 2021 was, as 2020? Or will the doomsday predictions be proven false? If they are indeed true, will the challenges manifest as predicted? Despite or perhaps because of all the challenges DW News says 2022 will bring, how will people take better care of themselves and each other this year? I’m Leila, and that’s the news for now.
