“When you feel like giving up, just remember the reason why you held on for so long.” — Hayley Williams
Hi everyone. It’s your host Hubert with another episode of the Pronunciation Challenge. With today’s episode, I want to take this opportunity to talk about a very serious topic which is suicide. Hopefully, as part of our new year’s resolution, we can make an effort to reach out to friends we haven’t spoken to in a while. Check in on people. I’m sure what we’re all learning from this pandemic is how we humans need social contact with each other. I’m suggesting we do this because I lost a friend to suicide when this pandemic first started. I actually tried to shoot a video to honor my friend’s memory but it didn’t feel sincere. I had the pressure to put on a show for everyone to see at the expense of my friend so I ultimately decided against it. However, with the Pronunciation Challenge, I feel more comfortable talking about my friend now. Let’s get to the featured sentence first before I share my story.
Today’s featured sentence:
Depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders are often present in the suicidal.
I’ll say that again.
Depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders are often present in the suicidal.
Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.
For the first word, we have
Depression
Three syllables.
The first syllable “DE” has a short “U” sound. “PRE” has a short “E” sound supported by the “PR” sound in front. “SSION” sounds like “SHIN” like the front leg below the knee. Depression.
Next up, we have
Anxiety
Four syllables
The first syllable, “AN” sounds like the name “AND” but without the “D”. “XI” has a long “i” sound. “E” has a short “E” sound and “TY” sounds like “TEA” like the beverage. Anxiety.
Suicidal
Four syllables.
“SU” sounds like the name “SUE”. “i” simply has the short “i” sound. “CI” sounds like “SIGH” like you’re sighing and “DAL” sounds like “DULL” like it’s boring, dull. Suicidal.
Moving onto Vocabulary!
The first word is:
1. Depression
the state of feeling very unhappy and without hope for the future
Used in a sentence you could say,
“The patient is suffering from depression.”
Next word,
2. Anxiety
Definition
an uncomfortable feeling of nervousness or worry about something that is happening or might happen in the future
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“I am learning to cope with my anxiety.”
And lastly,
3. Suicidal
Definition:
People who are suicidal want to kill themselves or are in a mental state in which it is likely that they will try to do so.
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“He/she has been having suicidal thoughts lately so we must get him/her help.”
So I hope you guys don’t mind me talking about my friend in today’s episode. I hope you listeners could take something from this and reach out to a friend that may need your help at this very moment.
My friend from high school was at one point, a close friend. I wasn’t exactly the brightest of students (meaning I wasn’t very smart) and often needed someone to tutor me in Math. My buddy happened to be good at Math and also stayed up late. I remember spending many sleepless nights getting tutored by him and honestly, we’d end up talking half the time instead. I still failed Math that semester but my mark would’ve been even lower if he didn’t help me. I was just lazy. There was no way I could cram a full semester’s worth of knowledge into a couple of nights. That’s how we became friends.
There were no signs. He joined the military, had a bunch of real estate investments and was also a police officer. He seemed very happy so when I received news that he was gone, it totally took me by surprise.
I used to only reach out to him only when it was convenient and I feel horrible for it. I should’ve taken more time to just talk to him and see how he was doing. Perhaps an extra ear to listen to him would have helped. I don’t know and I don’t have the answers but maybe, just maybe that would’ve helped.
The lesson I took from this is this. Life is precious and time is limited so make each day count. Be grateful for every breath we take and don’t forget to let those that matter to you, know how you feel.
Rest in peace buddy. We all miss you.
Thanks for taking the time to listen every week. For any new listeners, sorry I started you off with such a heavy topic.
Alright, see everyone again next week. Bye.
