"Is there anybody else out there?" We have a myriad of myths, legends and prophecies that try to answer that, but sending the James Webb Telescope into deep space may help us find out the answer to that and more.
Since one of Webb's main goals is to study extremely distant and usually faint wavelengths, engineers had to ensure the observatory is protected from all heat sources, including itself.
Have you ever looked up at the stars on a really clear, dark night and wondered, "Is there anybody else out there?" That’s the kind of question that people have asked all throughout humanity. To answer it, cultures and civilizations have come up with a myriad of myths, legends, and prophecies. But recently, humanity launched a piece of technology that may help us get a little closer to some real, factual answers. I’m talking about the James Webb Telescope which launched aboard Arianespace's Ariane 5 rocket on Saturday, Dec. 25, 2021, from the ELA-3 Launch Zone of Europe’s Spaceport at the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou, French Guiana. You’ve probably seen at least one mention of it in the news lately, and if that’s got you wondering, "What’s the big deal?" then check out today’s video. Kenny Harris explains the basics behind the JWST, like why it has to travel so far and what kinds of challenges the engineers faced.
In the meantime, let’s move on to the Sentence of the Day:
Since one of Webb's main goals is to study extremely distant and usually faint wavelengths, engineers had to ensure the observatory is protected from all heat sources, including itself. 由於韋伯望遠鏡的主要任務是研究極為遙遠且通常相當微弱的波長,工程師們必須確保望遠鏡不會受到任何熱源的干擾,包括它自己。
Pronunciation tips: Linking words: one + of had + to extremely KK: /ɪkˋstrimlɪ/ IPA: /ɪkˈstriːm.li/ wavelengths KK: /ˋwev͵lɛŋθs/ IPA: /ˈweɪv.leŋθs/ observatory KK: /əbˋzɝvə͵torɪ/ IPA: /əbˈzɝː.və.tɔːr.i/
Vocabulary:
extremely (adv.) KK: /ɪkˋstrimlɪ/ IPA: /ɪkˈstriːm.li/ very 非常;極端;極其 i.e. Aila refused to take a nap earlier, so with all the excitement of the holidays, she’s now extremely tired and cranky. Aila 早些時候不想睡午覺,所以因為假期過得太興奮了,她現在非常疲倦和暴躁。
faint (adj.) KK: /fent/ IPA: /feɪnt/ not strong or clear; slight 微弱的;不清晰的;微小的 i.e. Let’s open up all the windows and get some fresh air in here. There’s a faint smell of mold. 所有的窗戶打開吧然後呼吸新鮮空氣吧。 這裏 有一股淡淡的霉味。
ensure (v.) KK: /ɪnˋʃʊr/ IPA: /ɪnˈʃʊr/ to make something certain to happen 確保;保證 i.e. Keeping all your frustrations to yourself is a great way to ensure that you’ll get into a huge fight, so you might want to talk with Austin now. 如果把所有的挫折都藏在心裡你肯定會跟 Austin 大吵,所以你現在應該要去跟他談談。
You know what’s always amazed and puzzled me? The fact that when we look up at the stars in the night sky, we’re actually looking back in time. It sounds kinda crazy, doesn’t it? Considering how fast light moves (over one billion kilometers per hour) and considering how vast the universe is, that means that by the time the light from a distant star reaches us, it could already be dead. We could be looking at the last remains of that star’s life just before it burned out. But that’s only if we’re looking at the stars from here on the ground.
If we could put more telescopes, like the Webb, into deep space, that would mean we could capture images of stars and other celestial bodies closer to their respective real times. Wait, would that mean we had traveled to the future?
If you live in or near a big city, it may be hard to see the stars at night with all the light pollution, but if you have a chance to get away to the countryside or higher up in elevation, maybe even visit a designated "dark sky" area, I highly recommend it. Somehow, the starry night sky always comforts me. All my problems seem really small when I stare at the stars.
What about you? Do you enjoy stargazing? Have you ever looked through a telescope? Let me know in the comments. And as always, hit that record button when you’re ready with your sentence. Catch ya next time.
