G’day Voicetubers, how are we all today? Whether you are a parent or not, our video today is actually really interesting to watch because it helps you look into your upbringing (how you were raised when you were young) and understand how that affects the way you act, think, and feel. First, we need to understand the difference between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivation is reward-driven behaviour. Being paid to do a job is an example of extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is defined as something that you do because of your inner will and you do it without expecting a reward. Let’s take a look at today’s featured sentence :
Sentence: While most rewards significantly undermine our intrinsic interest, positive feedback, which is an extrinsic motivator, inspires us to keep going. 雖然大多數獎勵大大削弱了我們的內在興趣,但作為外在動力的正向反饋卻會激勵著我們繼續前進。
Pronunciation Tips: significantly undermine intrinsic interest positive which is (linking words) extrinsic motivator inspire
Vocabulary: 1. undermine KK[͵ʌndɚˋmaɪn] IPA//ˌʌn.dɚˈmaɪn/ v. 削弱 to make someone less confident, less powerful, or less likely to succeed, or to make something weaker, often gradually
Example - Ethan hopes that his cold will not undermine his ability to present his speech on stage. Ethan希望他的感冒不會影響他上台演講的能力。
2. intrinsic KK[ɪnˋtrɪnsɪk] IPA//ɪnˈtrɪn.zɪk/ adj. 內在的,根本的 being an extremely important and basic characteristic of a person or thing
Example - If he really loves you, he would love you for intrinsic reasons and not for your appearance or wealth. 若他真的愛妳,是因為妳的內在,而不是因為妳的外表或財富。
3. inspire KK[ɪnˋspaɪr] IPA//ɪnˈspaɪr/ v. 激勵 to make someone feel that they want to do something and can do it v. 賦予靈感 to give someone an idea for a book, film, product, etc.
Example - The documentary (film) really inspired me to start exercising more and eat healthy foods. 那個紀錄片激勵了我要多運動還有吃健康的食物。 Outro:
When you are driven by extrinsic motivation, you continue to do the work even if you don’t enjoy it. Why? Well….because you will get a reward after completing the work, whether it is money or praise. How many of you think you are working aimlessly only because you feel the society expects you to do so? And how many of you listen more to what your heart desires and act accordingly? Usually, when you do something out of intrinsic motivation, the outcome is self-satisfaction. Our video concludes by saying that it’s probably good to combine extrinsic and intrinsic motivation together. This way we can learn what we want, and get the feedback we need in order to stay motivated to explore new roads into a better society. For example, an artist who loves to paint follows his intrinsic motivation and spends all his time painting but stays poor. If he learns how to market his artwork and sells them to make good money (out of extrinsic motivation), he would become financially stable and have more freedom to keep doing what he loves. Wouldn’t that be the best of both worlds? If you have any thoughts on this topic to share with us, feel free to leave a comment underneath my transcript. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to record your pronunciation challenge. Bye-bye and see you next week!

☺While most rewards significantly undermine our intrinsic interest, positive feedback, which is an extrinsic motivator, inspires us to keep going. 本身的、本質的、根本的、固有的、內在的[(+in/to)];真正的;內部的、本體內的 ■extrinsic [ɛkˋstrɪnsɪk] (adj.)外在的;非固有的;非本質的;外來的;(身體)外部的、外源的; ■inspire [ɪnˋspaɪr] (vt.)鼓舞、激勵、驅使[(+to)];賦予…靈感;激起、喚起(感情、思想等)[(+in/with)];引起、產生;煽動 (vi.)吸氣;賦予靈感

You need both intrinsicism and extrinsicism but intrinsicism is overall way more valuable to an individual because it is genuine and self-reliant and it adheres to ethics (ethics being defined as the field that answers what one should do which is built on the hierarchy of values based on a rationality). I don't see in any way how being Mira is ever better than being Tom. Mira's life seems so much more miserable. This is, of course, my opinion. Feel free to add anything further or disagree in a reply. Knowing different perspectives is always useful :)
