Jeff 的逐字稿在這!
Intro:
Hi, VoiceTubers! This is Jeff Chiao. The world of modern arts is often really difficult to understand with untrained eyes, and sometimes can be confusing or even irritating while we learned the seemingly sloppy painting that looks like a four-year-old’s doodle was sold for millions of dollars.
And now, there is a kind of modern art painting that makes the whole situation seem even more ridiculous. The “white paintings”, which are paintings drawn with white pigment on a blank canvas and nothing else, were sold in millions of dollars on auctions, astonishing people who are not familiar with modern arts… which is, most of us. Why a seemingly unfinished, or even unstarted painting could be treated as a masterpiece? Is this a scam or some sort of social experiment? Well, go watch today’s video to find out for yourself. But before that, let’s check out the featured sentence first.
Featured Sentence:
“It's very easy to be dismissive of things that we're not immediately attracted to.”
[ 我們很容易就會對一開始沒有立刻吸引到我們的東西感到排斥。 ]
Okay, let me repeat it one more time, just a little bit slower.
“It's very easy to be dismissive of things that we're not immediately attracted to.”
With that out of the way, let’s head to the pronunciation tips.
Pronunciation tips:
As always, let’s start with pointing out the connections between successive words. First example of today is “dismissive of.” We could combine the /v/ sound in “dismissive” with “of”, and pronounce them as, “dismissiv-of.” Notice that the “of" here should be pronounced as a weaker /əv/, instead of the normal /ɒv/.
The other example is “not immediately.” We could combine the /t/ sound in “not” with “immediately”, and pronounce them as, “not-immediately.”
We also have a couple of worth-noting words today. First one is “dismissive”. All three “i”s sound like a shorter /ɪ/, and the stress should be put on the second syllable /mɪ/. Dismissive. Dismissive.
The other word is immediately. Both of “i”s sound like a shorter /ɪ/, the first /e/ sounds like a longer /i/ while the second remains silent, the “a” sound like /ə/, and the stress should be put on the second syllable /mi/. Immediately. Immediately.
All right, with the tips sorted, let’s get to the vocabulary.
Vocabulary:
dismissive (adj.) KK [dɪsˋmɪsɪv] IPA /dɪˈsmɪs.ɪv/
showing that you do not think something is worth considering
表現輕視的;認為不值得考慮的
Although most big retailers were dismissive of Ria’s offer, a handful of smaller shops agreed to put her products on their shelves.
儘管大部分的大型零售商對於 Ria 的提議不屑一顧,少數較小的店家同意把他的產品放到架上。
immediately (adv.) KK [ɪˋmidɪɪtlɪ] IPA /ɪˈmiː.di.ət.li/
now or without waiting or thinking
立即,馬上
The skincare products caught customers’ eyes immediately for their unique packages.
那些護膚產品因為獨特的包裝馬上就吸引到了顧客的目光。
attract (v.) KK [əˋtrækt] IPA /əˈtrækt/
(of people, things, places, etc.) to pull or draw someone or something towards them, by the qualities they have, especially good ones
(尤因具有積極、值得讚賞的品質而)吸引;招引;引起
The brand then soon attracted bigger cosmetic companies' attention in the industry, and one of them offered to acquire Ria’s company completely.
該品牌很快地便吸引了業界其他規模更大的美妝公司的注意,而其中有一家向 Ria 提議要完全併購他的公司。
Outro:
So that wraps up today’s episode!
Do you enjoy modern arts? For most of us that were not trained to view these creations from a construcural or even academic point of view, modern arts seem like something mysterious or even pretentious. Art is subjective in its nature, and for the most part, we could never completely understand the creator’s mindset behind their works. In my opinion, however, maybe it doesn’t have to be that complicated after all. What the artist was thinking while creating the piece is indeed intriguing, yet it is the viewer’s instinctive emotional response while seeing the piece truly gives meaning to an art piece. The art pieces are not completed by the creators alone–it is the collaboration between the creator and the viewer that makes an artwork complete.
And that’s all for today! This is Jeff Chiao from VoiceTube. Hope y’all have a good one! Until next time, goodbye.
