[TRANSCRIPT]
"I'm really nervous about my job interview later, but I’m thinking lots of positive thoughts. Send lots of positive energy my way!"
"Of course. Good luck!"
Three weeks later...
"I still haven’t heard back from that company I interviewed with. I keep thinking positive thoughts about it, but I'm getting really freaked out!"
"Did they tell you when they might contact you?"
"Not really. They just said that they're interviewing lots of people and that I'd hear from them in a week if they chose me, but now I’m depressed."
What’s up, VoiceTubers? Leila here. Did that conversation sound at all familiar to you? There are some people who are convinced that focusing on positive thoughts is the way to achieve happiness and good results in your life–but is it? Today’s video argues the opposite, not that we should only focus on worst-case scenarios, but how thinking negatively a little more often might actually be helpful. Check out the video if you haven’t already. It does a better job of explaining it than I’m doing here.
In the meantime, let’s move on to our Sentence of the Day:
We trick ourselves into thinking that we've achieved the thing, even though we haven't necessarily taken any actual steps towards achieving the goal that we want.

2. achieve (v.) KK: /əˋtʃiv/ IPA: /əˈtʃiːv/
to succeed in finishing something or reaching an aim, especially after a lot of work or effort
i.e. Relying on willpower alone isn’t the best way to achieve your goals.
3. necessarily (adv.) KK: /ˋnɛsəsɛrɪlɪ/ IPA: /ˈnes.ə.ser.ɪl.i/
used in negatives to mean "in every case" or "therefore"
i.e. I saw Thomas and Katherine at the movie theater, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they were on a date.
Today’s video mentions a film called "The Secret" which, after I watched it years ago, got me thinking that I could somehow influence my luck or the events of my day through positive thinking.
I started experimenting with random things, like visualizing driving to work and hitting every single green light along the way. Yeah, that didn’t work. I tried positively visualizing the exact item I was shopping for sitting on the store shelf just waiting for me, and whaddaya know? It’s on sale at a deep discount, too! Nope, didn’t work.
Then there was one day when I was out shopping for a used car. I had made appointments with a bunch of different sellers on the same day, and I went from place to place checking out all these second-hand cars. Didn’t like the first one or the second one because I had this image in my mind of the car that I wanted.
I’m not sure how many different used cars I actually looked at that day. It felt like a lot, and by the end of the day, I was pretty exhausted. Finally, I was down to my last option. I went to a small used car dealer, and as soon as I arrived, there was my car sitting outside! It was a Japanese silver 2-door coupe in great condition. I bought the car and it was everything I had hoped it would be.
Because of that experience, I really started to believe that there was something to this "law of attraction" stuff–except that was almost 20 years ago now, and nothing like that has EVER happened to me again. Despite me trying to think positively and manifest the things I want, that car was the one and only time it worked, if I can even credit it to positive thinking at all.
What about you? Do you think this positive thinking stuff is real, or are we just kidding ourselves? Has it ever worked for you? Let me know in the comments. And as always, hit that record button when you’re ready with your sentence. Catch ya next time.
