Adenosine is an inhibitor that keeps many brain regions in check, including one called the reticular activating system, which basically amplifies brain activity.
“I never laugh until I’ve had my coffee.” - Clark Gable
Hello everyone, and good morning to the ones who are up and early practicing their English! I’m so proud of you guys! So what’s the first thing you do when you wake up early to work? That’s right, you get a cup of coffe- wait, you mean, you brush your teeth first? Well, that’s embarrassing. Yes, I sometimes drink a cup of coffee even before I brush my teeth. I have to stay awake to brush my teeth, you know! So how does coffee work exactly? Well, in today’s lesson, we’ll be explaining how coffee works with a bunch of new complicated words that you can add to your vocabulary list! Let’s get to it, shall we?
Today’s featured sentence: Adenosine is an inhibitor that keeps many brain regions in check, including one called the reticular activating system, which basically amplifies brain activity.
I’ll say that again.
Adenosine is an inhibitor that keeps many brain regions in check, including one called the reticular activating system, which basically amplifies brain activity.
Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.
For the first word, we have Adenosine Four syllables. “A” has a short U sound. “Den” sounds like the word den, as in a fox den. “No” has a short U sound and “SINE” sounds exactly like the past participle of see, seen. Adenosine.
Next up, we have Inhibitor Four syllables “In” like “in and out”. “Hi” has a short i sound. “Bi” also has a short i sound and “tor” has your typical “E R” sound with a T in front. Inhibitor.
Lastly, we have, Reticular Four syllables. “Re” has a short U sound. “Ti” has a short i sound. “Cu” sounds like the letter Q. “Lar” has a typical “E R” sound with an L in front. Reticular.
Moving onto Vocabulary!
The first word is: 1. Inhibitor Definition something that stops or slows down a process Used in a sentence you could say, “Oftentimes, for many school learners, the physical process of writing is an inhibitor.”
Next word, 2. Reticular Definition characterized by a fine network or netlike structure. Used in a sentence, you could say “The lungs exhibited a yellowish surface with a reticular pattern”
And lastly, 3. Amplify Definition: to increase the size or effect of something Used in a sentence, you could say: “A funeral can amplify the feelings of regret and loss for the relatives.”
So that’s how coffee works! I always thought that coffee does something to make you more alert but it actually suppresses the part in the brain that makes you tired! Suppresses kind of means to put an end to something or at least hold it back. How many cups do you drink a day? When I spent some time in Vietnam, I remember drinking maybe 4 cups a day. I didn’t drink it because I was tired, I drank it because it tasted so good! Have any of you tried the egg coffee? It’s when a raw egg is dropped into coffee and mixed together to form something like a custard. It’s really good!
Alright cool, hope you found today’s episode useful, and as always, thanks for listening!
