A bear walks into a bar and says, “Give me a whiskey and … cola.”
“Why the big pause?” asks the bartender. The bear shrugged. “I’m not sure; I was born with them.”
Hi, there, how is everyone doing today? Did you get my joke in the introduction? Pause (p-a-u-s-e) sounded the same as paws (p-a-w-s) ? OK, never mind….I may need to brush up on my joke-telling skills! Do you like jokes? I love watching funny TV shows. I also like watching stand-up comedy. I always admire the comedians and their ability to tell funny jokes. They make it seem so easy and effortless. But in fact, it takes a lot of preparation and concentration. First of all, you have to come up with a funny story. Then, you need to memorize the details and order of words. There can be a few different ways of telling a story, and choosing the right order or* words is also very important. So comedy is a real art in itself, as hard as any other form of art. Comedy is also an ancient art, and it most probably began with the Greek theater, thousands of years ago. Today, there are many forms of comedy, because we have more ways of communication than in the old times. We see comedy in films, television shows, theatre, literature, video creations on platforms such as YouTube and TikTok!
It is very easy to go wrong with telling a joke so be sure to be prepared before you try it in front of many people. You should memorize the joke, tell it to your friends and check their reactions. Also, you need to note your tone of voice, where you pause, how you deliver the punchline at the end - which is usually the most important part of the joke.

Humour is an old-time tradition, and it also has a lot to do with personal taste. Not everyone will agree that the joke I’d just told you is funny, but perhaps some of you might. Sometimes it might also take a few practices before you make it perfect!

One last piece of advice - if you have to give a talk at work or at school – you can try to begin with a joke. If you tell a good one, I can assure you, it’s a great way to break the ice between you and the audience and you’ll get their attention immediately.
