Today’s video talks about a scary topic - nightmares, muhahahahaha! You may wonder why we get nightmares, or how they happen. Well, don’t worry! Today’s video has you covered! It’s highly informative so I suggest you check it out. I can tell you my recurring nightmare story, but I’ll save that for later. For now, let’s take a look at today’s featured sentence:
Sentence:
Stressing about a looming unpleasantness, as well as anxiety from events passed can cause nightmares.
甩不去的煩事造成的壓力和過去造成的焦慮都會導致做惡夢。
Pronunciation Tips:
Blended words: as well as
Unpleasantness - 4 syllables - short u, short e, schwa, short e
Anxiety - z sound on the x
Vocab:
1. looming (Adj.) (不希望或不愉快的事情)迫近的,逼近的
KK[ˋlumɪŋ] IPA /ˈluː.mɪŋ/
If something is ‘looming’ it seems like it’s about to happen soon, causing the person to worry. Here’s an example sentence: “Although everyone was nice to her when she arrived at work, Julie had a looming sense that she was about to hear some very bad news.”
雖然她來上班時每個人都對她很好,但 Julie 隱約感覺到她即將聽到一些非常不好的消息。
2. unpleasantness (n.) 不愉快、不快樂(的事)
KK[ʌnˋplɛzntnɪs] IPA: /ʌnˈplez.ənt.nəs/
Unpleasantness is the fact of not being enjoyable or pleasant. Here’s an example sentence: Johnny decided to keep going, despite the heavy rains being a large source of unpleasantness.
雖然下大雨很令人掃興,但 Johnny 還是決定繼續前行。
3. anxiety (n.) 焦慮
KK[æŋˋzaɪətɪ] IPA: /æŋˈzaɪ.ə.t̬i/
Anxiety is an uncomfortable feeling of nervousness or worry about something that is happening or might happen. Here’s an example sentence: “Brian’s heart was filled with anxiety before his speech because he hates public speaking.”
Brian 在上台演講前心裡滿是焦慮,因為他很討厭在大眾面前演講。
Outro:
And that’s the end of today’s pronunciation challenge. As promised, here is my recurring nightmare story:
So, I’m in Canada. I’m at my parents’ house, enjoying time with my family, but then I get the sense that something is wrong. Suddenly I remember I’m not supposed to be in Canada, I’m supposed to be in Taiwan! I check the calendar. It’s Sunday! That means I have to be at work tomorrow! But even a direct flight is 13 to 14 hours from Toronto! I frantically check airline websites and think about how quickly I can get to the airport. In some versions of the nightmare, I actually make it on the plane before I wake up.
When I wake up, I feel relieved to know that I’m in Taiwan and that I’ll have no trouble getting to work on time. It’s kind of a silly nightmare, isn’t it? Yet it’s been happening for years.
But enough about me, I want to hear about you! What kind of nightmares have you had? Are they scary, or silly? Let me know in the comments below, and don’t forget to do your recording!
I’m Jonathan for VoiceTube. I’ll catch you next time!
