“It’s not the 'nice' guy who brings about real social change. 'Nice' guys look nice because they're conforming. It's the 'bad' guys, who only look nice a hundred years later, that are the real Dynamic force in social evolution." Robert M. Pirsig

Has anyone ever heard of the term, “Nice guys finish last”? Doesn’t it seem that people who aren’t nice get ahead in life? Hi everyone, it's Hubert with the Pronunciation Challenge and today I’m presenting a video that gives advice to these so-called “nice guys”. So when I say, “nice guys”, I’m not referring to just the male listeners out there. “Nice guys” is just a term for someone who acts overly nice to try and fit in. When you try so hard to fit in and conform (listening to the rules, standards, or laws) then it’s hard to stand out. When you shine too brightly, then others want to dim your light. How do we find the balance without becoming the same people we loathe (feel intense dislike or disgust for). It’s a fine balance and we dance the line between sticking out and pulling it back in. Machiavelli, an Italian Renaissance political philosopher and skilled politician, wrote a book on this very topic. Let’s watch the video and see what he has to say. Once you’re done with that, come back for the featured sentence, and let’s get to practicing!

Today’s featured sentence:
“They should know how to scare and intimidate, cajole and bully, entrap and beguile.”

I’ll say that again.

“They should know how to scare and intimidate, cajole and bully, entrap and beguile

Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.

For the first word, we have
Intimidate
Four syllables.
The first syllable is “IN”, like you’re going in and out. “TIM” like the name. The “i” here has a short “u” sound and “DATE”, like you’re going on a date. Intimidate.

Next word.
Cajole
Two syllables
“CA” has a short “U” sound. “JOLE”, sounds like “OLD” but without the “D” sound. Now add a “J” in front and you have “JOLE”. Cajole.

And our last one would be,
Beguile
Two syllables.
“BE” has a short “U” sound. “GUILE” has the same name as “GUILE from Street Fighter! For those that don’t get this reference, “GUILE” sounds like a combination of the letter “i” and the word “all”. “EYE-ALL”. Now add a G in front. “GUILE”. Beguile.

Moving onto Vocabulary!

The first word is:
1. Intimidate
Definition
to frighten or threaten someone, usually in order to persuade them to do something that you want them to do
Used in a sentence you could say,
“The bully tried to intimidate the boy with his gazing stare.”

Next word,
2. Cajole
Definition
to persuade someone to do something they might not want to do, by pleasant talk and (sometimes false) promises
Used in a sentence you could say,
“He really knows how to cajole people into doing what he wants.”

And lastly,
3. Beguile
Definition:
to persuade, attract, or interest someone, sometimes in order to deceive them
Used in a sentence you could say,
“The senior kitchen staff member was able to beguile the new hire into doing his errands for the day.”

“The Prince” seems like an interesting book. The video said that it wasn’t about becoming a “tyrant” (in this case, a Tyrant means a bad person with no morals) but more about learning from these “tyrants” and using what we learned to be more effective at getting what we want. This reminds me of the Bruce Lee quote, “Absorb what is useful, discard what is useless and add what is specifically your own”. Which basically means to take what is useful and throw away whatever you think doesn’t fit your style. In order for us to even compete, we might even have to use the same weapons. There’s a saying that we should keep our friends close but our enemies closer for a reason. Sometimes the enemies reveal (to make previously unknown or secret information known to others or yourself) something in us that is an uncomfortable truth in ourselves and might have to face one day. Interesting stuff. As a Canadian, I have the reputation of being super nice and polite. It is true, to a degree. Sometimes I catch myself apologizing to chairs or tables if I accidentally bump into them. Perhaps it’s about time I make some changes. I don’t mean I’m going to start being a jerk from now on, but perhaps I should be assertive with who I am. My acting teachers always told me to stop being so Canadian when it came to acting. They told me to stop apologizing for our existence! I’m going to pick up a copy of this book.

Alright, guys, it’s time to wrap it up with today’s episode. Again, my Instagram is hughtran_ if you want to drop by and say hi. Next episode, I’ll be presenting a video about overcoming obstacles, the Marcus Aurelius way! This will be my second time talking about Marcus Aurelius. I love the way he goes about life and I feel I have much to learn from him. Ok, see everyone next time! Bye!
