Intro:

Hey, guys! Wen here. Be honest, when you read the title of today’s video “We were all female”, you must have been a little surprised, right? No, there is no hidden message or any particular movement behind this, but it’s actually talking about how we all fundamentally started off as females. Of course, there is an interesting process behind it (hint: biology), which you can learn about in the featured video today. So do go on and check it out! Well, let’s get started and check out the sentence of the day. Brace yourselves! It’s a long one, but we will break it down and highlight some key vocabulary.

(44 - 57 seconds)

Once activated, one of the genes on the Y chromosome known as the SRY gene has two functions: to inhibit certain features of the X chromosome and to impose through dominance the physiological traits that a male must have.

Pronunciation tips
Chromosome /ˈkroʊ.mə.soʊm/
Dominance /ˈdɑː.mə.nəns/
Physiological /ˌfɪz.i.əˈlɑː.dʒɪ.kəl/
Impose /ɪmˈpoʊz/

gene n. [dʒin] /dʒiːn/ 基因,遺傳因子

The part of the DNA that gets passed on through parents and controls the development of an animal or plant.

Example: Personalities are influenced by our genes and the environment we are surrounded by during our lifetime.

Genes contain an incredible amount of information, including your eye and hair color.

inhibit v. [ɪnˋhɪbɪt] /ɪnˈhɪb.ɪt/ 禁止;抑制

To inhibit means to prevent something from happening, or stop someone from doing something.
So, In our sentence for today it means to prevent the development of certain features of the X chromosome.
Example: You should never allow fear to inhibit you; you are able to achieve whatever you put your mind to.

trait n.

A special characteristic that can lead to a certain behavior, often in relation to personality. Some traits can be passed down from parents as well. Often we notice there are some similarities between us and one of our parents, these don’t only have to be physically. When we talk about a way a person behaves, we refer to this behavior as “trait”.

Example: Patience is one of her best traits. She definitely gets that from her father.

Outro:

One thing people struggle with when speaking English is the use of personal pronouns like he, she or it. Wouldn’t it just be easier if we could decide on using one term for all genders? Or do you think it’s useful to have individual pronouns? Isn’t that interesting how languages can actually influence the way we view gender in our society. What do you think? Let me know in the comments below and don’t forget to share your recording. See you next time! Bye bye!

0:21 Be honest, when you read the title of today’s video “We were all female”, you must have been a little surprised, right? No, there is no hidden(a.隱藏的) message or any particular movement(n.活動) behind this, but it’s actually talking about how we all fundamentally(adv.根本性地) started off as females. Of course, there is an interesting process behind it (hint提示: biology生物學), which you can learn about in the featured(a.精選的) video today. So {do go on} and check it out! Well, let’s get started and check out the sentence of the day. So, brace yourselves(做好準備)! It’s a long one, but we will break it down and highlight(v.強調) some key vocabulary. So, don’t worry. Okay, here it goes:

Once activated(activate[ˋæktə͵vet]v.使活化), one of the genes on the Y chromosome([ˋkromə͵som]n.染色體) known as the SRY gene has two functions: to inhibit([ɪnˋhɪbɪt]v.) certain features(n.特徵) of the X chromosome and to impose([ɪmˋpoz]v.把..強加於) through dominance([ˋdɑmənəns]n.控制,支配) the physiological([͵fɪzɪəˋlɑdʒɪk!]a.生理的) traits (n.特徵) that a male must have.

1. gene [dʒin] n. 基因,遺傳因子 = The part of the DNA that gets passed on through parents and controls the development of an animal or plant. Genes contain an incredible amount of information, including your eye and hair color.

Ex: Personalities are influenced(v.影響) by our genes and the environment we are surrounded(v.圍繞) by during our lifetime.

2. inhibit [ɪnˋhɪbɪt] v. 禁止;抑制 = To inhibit means to prevent (v.預防,妨礙)something from happening, or stop someone from doing something.
So, In our sentence for today it means to prevent the development of certain features of the X chromosome.

Ex: You should never allow fear(n.恐懼) to inhibit you, you are able to achieve(v.達成) whatever you put your mind to.

+ set/put your mind to sth : 決心要,一心想
If you'd just put your mind to it, I'm sure you could do it.

3. trait [tret] n. 特徵,特點= feature = A special characteristic([͵kærəktəˋrɪstɪk]n.特徵) that can lead to a certain behavior([bɪˋhevjɚ]n.行為), often in relation to personality(n. Some traits can be passed down(把..傳給後人) from parents as well. Often we notice there are some similarities([͵sɪməˋlærətɪ]n.相似) between us and one of our parents, these don’t only have to be physically(adv. When we talk about a way a person behaves([bɪˋhev]v.表現), we refer to this behavior as “trait”.

physical traits/features : 外表的特徵
personality traits/features: 個性的特徵

Ex: Patience(n.耐心) is one of her best traits. She definitely gets that from her father.

One thing people struggle([ˋstrʌg!]v.努力,掙扎) with when speaking English is the use of personal(a.人稱的) pronouns([ˋpronaʊn]n.代名詞) like he, she or it. Wouldn’t it just be easier if we could decide on using one term(n.專門名詞) for all genders([ˋdʒɛndɚ]n. Or do you think it’s useful to have individual([͵ɪndəˋvɪdʒʊəl]a.個別的) pronouns? Isn’t that interesting how languages can actually influence the way we view(v.看待,審視) gender in our society. What do you think?
