Hey, guys! How’s your 2021 going so far? So, we’re already three months into the new year, but still pretty limited when it comes to travel. Don’t worry! Those of you itching to hop on a plane again to venture into the lands beyond, I’m sure you’ll have the chance to do so again… soon. Maybe. Well, today’s video happens to point out the importance of travel - comparing the past with the present. Why do people enjoy traveling anyway? Is it just for those posts on social media or is there more behind it? The video talks about the origins and reasons for travel, and these go waaaay back. Go check it out! Okay, we’re going to highlight one particular sentence from the video, and make sure to expand our vocabulary just a little bit more today. Ready?

Pronunciation tips:

we’ve been to
old-fashioned: adj. [ˋoldˋfæʃənd] 老派的,守舊的
As we can see this word consists of two other words. “Old” obviously referring to something from the past, and then “fashioned” like “fashion” relating to something that is current and popular. However, in this combination, it simply implies that it’s something that used to be common in the past, but also something that is very traditional.
Example: Instead of using a laptop or a tablet, my dad prefers to write his books the old-fashioned way, with a pen and some paper.
Even though it may be faster and more convenient to use electronic devices to write, my dad feels comfortable doing it the traditional way with pen and paper.
strive: v. [straɪv] 努力,苦幹,奮鬥 [+to-v] [+for/after]
Strive is a verb. It means to try hard, give your best, to continue trying and not stop. However, strive, this word, it rarely comes alone. In this example we see strive is followed by ‘to’ and then another verb. We could say “strive to succeed”, “strive to work harder”, “strive to learn as much as you can”.
Example: Despite the endless challenges in the marketing department, the team strives to impress their boss.
They work very hard, and usually this will go over a longer period of time in order to achieve success. Hopefully!
evolve: v. [ɪˋvɑlv] 發展,展開
Evolve!! You’ve probably already seen this word without realizing it. For all of you Pokémon GO fans out there, this is something that your little creature does. They change, and grow, and develop into something bigger and stronger. Societies, people, animals, and even languages evolve - they need to in order to adapt to our changing world. This process usually happens slowly and over time.
Example: The tiny business evolved into a multi-million dollar organization within a ten-year period.
So within ten years time this small company changed into something really big and probably really powerful.
Again, this usually needs time, but some things change a little faster than others. And that’s okay. Take your time with what you’re doing. You’ll get there. I think I’ve mentioned that I live in Taiwan and I’m learning Mandarin. So, I can totally relate to those trying to learn a new language. Some days, you feel like you’re still at the most basic level, but when we compare ourselves to where we were a few years ago, we often notice that there has been improvement and change. So keep going! Keep striving to learn English, or whatever it is that you’re trying to learn. You can do it!
Alright, well then, how about we finish here, on a positive note for today. When it comes to travel, what are your reasons for spending money and time just to see another part of the world? Does it really help us change and become better people? Let me know in the comments below, along with a recording. Okay, I’ll say good-bye for now and hope you have a wonderful, wonderful day! Cheers!

0:31 Hey, guys! How’s your 2021 going so far? So, we’re already three months into the new year, but still pretty limited (a.有限的) when it comes to travel. Don’t worry! Those of you itching(itch渴望v.) to hop on a plane again(adv.再次) to venture(v.冒險做) into the lands beyond(adv.更遠), I’m sure you’ll have the chance to do so again… soon. Maybe. Well, today’s video happens to point out the importance of travel - comparing(compare比較v.) the past with the present. Why do people enjoy traveling anyway? Is it just for those posts(n.網站上公佈的資訊) on social media or is there more behind it? The video talks about the origins(n.起源) and reasons for travel, and these go waaaay back. Go check it out! Okay, we’re going to highlight(v.強調) one particular sentence from the video, and make sure to expand(v.擴展) our vocabulary just a little bit more today. Ready? Alright, our example sentence is:
We should follow old-fashioned pilgrims([ˋpɪlgrɪm]n.朝聖者) in striving(strive/straɪv/v.努力) to evolve(/ɪˈvɑːlv/v.逐步發展) our characters according to the suggestions offered up(貢獻) by the places we've been to. (以下翻譯取自uickname) 我們應該依循傳統式的朝聖之旅,參照我們所到之處所提供我們的建議,努力提昇自己的人格。
1. old-fashioned [ˋoldˋfæʃənd] a. 老派的,守舊的
As we can see this word consists of two other words. First one “Old”, obviously referring to something from the past, and then “fashioned” like “fashion” relating to something that is current(a.現在的) and popular. However, in this combination, it simply implies(imply[ɪmˋplaɪ]v.暗示) that it’s something that used to be common(a.常見的) in the past, but also something that is very traditional.
+ fashion /ˈfæʃ.ən/ (v.) 手工製作
He fashioned a hat for himself from/out of newspaper.
他用報紙給自己做了一頂帽子。
+ fashion (n.)(尤指服裝、髮型、妝容的)流行款式,時興式樣
Long hair is back in fashion for men. 男士又流行留長髮了。
Ex: Instead of(=rather than而不是) using a laptop(n.筆記型電腦) or a tablet(/ˈtæb.lət/n.平板電腦), my dad prefers to write his books the old-fashioned way, with a pen and some paper.
Even though it may be faster and more convenient to use electronic devices(n.電子裝置) to write, my dad feels comfortable doing it the traditional way with pen and paper.
2. strive [straɪv] v. 努力,苦幹,奮鬥 Strive is a verb. It means to try hard, give your best, to continue trying and not stop. However, strive, this word, it rarely comes alone. In this example we see strive is followed by ‘to’ and then another verb. We could say “strive to succeed”, “strive to work harder”, “strive to learn as much as you can”.
*strive to do something
Ex: Despite(adv.即使) the endless challenges in the marketing department, the team strives to impress(v.給..留下深刻印象) their boss.
They work very hard, and usually this will go over a longer period of time in order to achieve(v.達成) success. Hopefully!
3. evolve [ɪˋvɑlv] v. 發展,展開
And last but not least(最後但同樣重要的), always number three: evolve. Here let the “e” does not make the long “i” sound, it’s shorter sound like “elephant”. Evolve!! Okay, I don’t know why I got so excited about that, but you’ve probably already seen this word without realizing it. For all of you Pokémon GO fans out there, this is something that your little creature(n.生物) does. They change, and grow, and develop into something bigger and stronger. Societies, people, animals, and even languages evolve, they need to in order to adapt(/əˈdæpt/v.使適應不同情況) to our changing world. This process usually happens slowly and over time(隨著時間).
Ex: The tiny business evolved into a multi-million(好幾百萬) dollar organization within a ten-year period.
So within ten years time this small company changed into something really big and probably really powerful. Again, this usually takes time, but some things change a little faster than others. And that’s okay. Take your time with what you’re doing. You’ll get there. I think I’ve mentioned(v.提及) that I live in Taiwan and I’m learning Mandarin([ˋmændərɪn]n.普通話). So, I can totally relate(v.相關) to those trying to learn a new language. Some days, you feel like you’re just still at the most basic level, but when we compare ourselves to where we were a few years ago, we often notice that there has been improvement(n.進步) and change. So keep going! Keep striving to learn English, or whatever you’re trying to learn. You can do it!
Alright, well then(那麼), how about we finish here, on a positive(a.正向的) note for today, well, we usually try to do that. And when it comes to travel though, what are your reasons for spending money and time just to see another part of the world, or another part of your own country? Does it really help us change and become better people? Let me know in the comments below, along with a recording. Okay, I’ll say good-bye for now and I hope you have a wonderful, wonderful day! Cheers!
