You know, recently I came across this quote from Mr. Chuck Swindoll 斯溫多先生說過的名言 (譯註: Chunk Swindoll是美國基督教牧師、作者、及教育家) and it really lit me up. Now, it’s something that I’ve heard before but for whatever 看完之後真的很鼓舞人心,雖然之前我早就聽過類似的道理 reason this time it really sank in. He says, “Life is 10% what happens to me, and 90% how I react to it.” Pretty powerful, right? Because the fact is that things happen to us each and every day 非常有道理,對不對?因為事實上,每天都會有許多事情發生在我們身上 that we have no control over. I mean, planes get delayed, we get sick, the internet goes 卻沒辦法全然掌控,也就是說,計畫總是趕不是變化,好比說,突然感冒,在傳輸大量資料時 out in the midst of a huge project, we lose businesses, we lose jobs, and, unfortunately, 網路竟然就斷了,或是失去數筆交易、失去工作,甚至更不幸的 we lose people that we love. Our lives radically change often at times whether we want them to or not. And ultimately, 我們的生活無時無刻充滿著變化,遑論我們想不想要,但是不論 the impact that any outside situation has on your life depends on how you react or respond to it. So let’s go back to this quote one more time. “Life is 10% what happens to me, and 我們再回來看這句名言:「所謂的人生,只有10%取決於遭遇到的事 90% how I react to it.” That means that as a factor of how your life goes and how 其中90%取決於你如何應對」,意思就是說,評斷你生活過得如何 good it is, what happens to you is this tiny little sliver of your life pie. (Life pie) 過得好不好的因素當中,發生的事物本身,不過只是其中的一小小部分 (人生如派啊) I wanted to share this here because I believe that this is one of those major life lessons, 我在這邊想跟大家分享這句話,是因為我相信這是人生必學的一大課題 one of those critical truths that if you really, really get it, it can radically alter the quality 若你真能領略,這也是非常重要的人生真理,它將能徹底改變你的生活品質 and the trajectory of your life. I mean, it can save your business, it can save your marriage, 以及整個人生軌道,好比說,它可以拯救你的事業,搶救你的婚姻 it can be the difference between failure and success in pretty much any endeavor and ultimately 它也是在成功與失敗兩者之間,你付出多少努力的寫照,不管最後結局如何 whether or not you reach your highest potential. Now, this idea is something that I personally 就目前來說,這是我個人 am always working on getting better at, and today I wanted to share 3 ways that you could 現在一直不斷努力希望能達到的目標,而今天我想分享3種方法可以讓你們 bring this rule to life, especially when the shiitake hits the fan. Number one is hold that tongue. When I’m fired up and I am in reaction mode, I have 第一,先閉起你的嘴,當我被惹火的時候,做事就很容易受情緒影響, to hold my tongue. I need to give myself a chance to really feel what I’m feeling, 我就得先冷靜下來,必須讓自己有機會了解到自己的感受 to actually process what’s happening, and think through my response. Otherwise if I 便於處理剛才所發生的事,並且思考我該如何應對,否則如果我 react and let that fired up Jersey girl out immediately, chances are I’m gonna make 硬碰硬直接對上,還破口大罵,本來可以簡單處理的事情 what should be a minor situation into a big, hot, fat mess. That is why I’m such a huge fan of meditation. Meditation really gives you the power to be 這就是為什麼我非常喜歡冥想這項活動,冥想能給予你在生活中遇到事情時 less reactive in life. You’re gonna have more control over your ability to chill out 反應不要那麼大的能力,你會比較能夠掌控冷靜應對、沈得住氣 and hold your tongue so when you’re ready you can actually respond more thoughtfully 的能力,如此一來,當你冷靜下來,你就更能夠做出經審思周慮過後 and appropriately. Number two is check yourself. So a simple practice when something unexpected happens 第二,確認自己現在的狀況,舉個簡單的例子,當生命中發生難以預期的事 in life and you are tempted to freak out is to stop and check yourself. Ask, “Am I ok in this moment? Am I breathing? Is my heart beating? Is the ground still underneath 試著問自己:「此刻的我還活著嗎?我還有呼吸嗎?我還有心跳嗎?地板是否還在我的 my feet?” 腳底下?」 If you can say yes to all three, that means you are really ok right now and in some ways 如果你這3個問題的答案都是肯定的,就說明你目前的狀態現在很正常、是沒問題的,就某方面來說 now is all there is. So for me if I get penne on a brand new white comforter or I get a 所以如果我全新的白棉被沾到管麵,或者 flat tire on the way to the airport or if I get a text that my dad is in the hospital, 在前往機場的路上爆胎,或甚至收到我爸住院的簡訊 before I freak out and react to what’s happening around me, I really try and practice and stop 在我整個脾氣大爆發,對發生的事物怒吼之前,我都會試著練習先冷靜下來 and ask myself, “Am I ok in this moment?” And so far, thankfully, the answer has always And when I’m ok in this moment, my responses to whatever is happening come 既然我目前的狀況是沒問題的,對於突然發生的事情 from a much more grounded and effective place. Number three: say, “And this is what I want.” So I learned this little mantra from my man Josh and it’s something that he says often in his Committed Impulse class, specifically 學到的這句名言,他自己常在他開的「放手一搏」課堂中提到 when he’s making you do these crazy squats up on your tippy toes that make your legs 特別是他叫你半蹲,讓你的腳尖感到不穩,使你的腳 shake uncontrollably. One caveat, this tool is super effective for pretty much everything besides tragedy level I’m talking about traffic jams and tech trouble and lost credit cards and stuff 衰事,舉凡是路上塞車、設備故障,甚至是弄丟信用卡,族繁不及備載 like that. It doesn't really apply to those heartbreaking and devastating events that 通通適用,雖然對於在我們人生中,必然面對的那些令人心碎 all of us have to face in our life. But saying, “and this is what I want,” either out 又身心交瘁的事物來說效果不大,但透過對自己說「這正如我所願」,不論是大聲說出 loud or in your head is a really effective way to reframe what you consider negative 或是在心裡講,都是一個能有效重組你認為是負面或失控情況 or out of your control. So for example, there’s drilling outside my house and I’ve got to 的方法,舉例來說,我一整天都得忙著趕稿,而外面卻有吵雜的鑽孔聲 write all day, and this is what I want. Or it’s raining on my wedding day, and this is what I want. This little mantra trains your brain to fully embrace whatever is happening in each moment 這句小小的名言,訓練你的大腦欣然接受當下所發生的事情 and really own it as though you wanted it, which puts you in complete control of that 讓你覺得猶如自己所願一樣,也恰好能讓你完全掌握住 magical 90% of your life pie. So I want to wrap up today with a great passage from our friend Chuck Swindoll that really 為我們今天所談的相互呼應 “Attitude is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, 「態度遠比事實重要許多,它比你的過去、所受的教育 money, circumstances, than failures and success, than what other people think, say, or do. 擁有的財富、身處環境、積累的功敗、其他人怎麼想、怎麼說、怎麼做都還更加重要 It is more important than appearance, ability, or skill. It will make or break a business, 它也比外表、能力、專長都來得重要。態度可以成就抑或毀滅一場生意 a home, a friendship, an organization... The remarkable thing is I have a choice every 一個家庭、一段友誼甚或一個團體...... 值得注意的是,每一天我都有自主決定態度 day of what my attitude will be. I cannot change my past. I cannot change the actions 的權利,我無法改變我的過去,我無法改變他人的所作所為 of others. I cannot change the inevitable. The only thing I can change is attitude. Life 我無法改變註定會發生的事,唯一能改變的就是我的態度 is ten percent what happens to me and ninety percent how I react to it.” Now I would love to hear from you.
