“Language is power, life and the instrument of culture, the instrument of domination and liberation.” - Angela Carter
Good morning, afternoon, evening, or good night to all you Voicetube listeners out there! If you’re up early practicing your English pronunciation with me then good job! I am so proud of you! For the new listeners, I am your host for today’s Pronunciation Challenge episode, Hubert Tran! The topic for today will be exactly the same reason you’re listening to this episode in the first place! We’ll be watching a video giving you six tips on improving your English quickly! Don’t be mistaken though, just because it’s six tips doesn’t mean it’ll be easy. You’ll need a good amount of focus and dedication to do this but wouldn’t you rather save time by focusing now instead of doing something with a little effort and not making much improvement? You can make more progress in 3 months if you do this than other people make in 1 year! Let’s get to the feature sentence and come back to me so we can talk about these tips!
Today’s featured sentence:
I highly recommend that you read the news, especially because you may already be familiar with what is happening in the world in your own language.
I’ll say that again.
I highly recommend that you read the news, especially because you may already be familiar with what is happening in the world in your own language.
Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.
For the first word, we have
Recommend
Three syllables.
“RE” has a short E sound. “CO” has a short U sound. “MEND” sounds the same as the word “end” but with an M in front. Recommend.
Next up, we have
Especially
Four syllables
“E” has a short E sound. Here’s a tip for the rest of the word. Say “special”. There, you just covered the next two syllables. The last syllable “LY” is simply saying Lee as in Bruce Lee. Especially.
Lastly, we have,
Familiar
Four syllables.
“FA” has a short U sound. “MI” has a short i sound. “LI” has a long E sound and “AR” sounds like the typical “E R” sound, “ER”. Familiar.
Moving onto Vocabulary!
The first word is:
1. Recommend
Definition
to suggest that someone or something would be good or suitable for a particular job or purpose, or to suggest that a particular action should be done
Used in a sentence you could say,
“I highly recommend this place because they serve the best ramen here!”
Next word,
2. Especially
Definition
very much; more than usual or more than other people or things
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“I love Toronto, especially in the summer.”
And lastly,
3. Familiar
Definition:
to know something or someone well
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“Are you familiar with how this program works?”
Ok, so did you remember all six steps? Let’s recap (recap means to state a summary of what was just said.) what the tips were. The tips were reading, listening, writing, speaking, vocabulary building, and having a conversation with a native speaker! Here’s a neat little trick my dad always told me when he was vocabulary building when he first started learning Chinese. He told me he just learned one new Chinese character a day. That’s it. At the end of one year, he learned 365 new words! For English, you can learn 3 new words a day and after a year, you now know 1095 words you never knew before. Just like the tortoise and the hare, slow and steady wins the race! Keep up the good work everyone. All that matters is that you show up everyday.
Alright, that about does it for today’s episode. Make sure you get your recordings in and thank you for listening. I’ll see everyone in the next episode, bye!

【心得】學語言就是要常接觸,多練習,不然很容易就會生疏。
