“I believe as humans we are blessed with a soul. Our lifeforce is so strong, complex and well developed that I find it hard to believe that it only popped into existence when we were born and on death, it just ends.” ― Richard Stuttle, Chasing Rainbows

Merry Christmas everyone! I hope everyone is having a happy holiday wherever you are considering everything that is going on in the world right now. I find Christmas in Asia to be very different from the feeling I get during the holidays in Canada. I always feel that Christmas feels like a one-day celebration in Asia whereas in North America, we’re already prepping for Christmas a month in advance. I usually equate Christmas in North America and Europe to the Lunar New Year in Asia. We get in the Lunar New Year mood weeks before the actual day and then it lasts for a couple of weeks afterwards.
Anyways, back to the video at hand. I tried looking for a Christmas-themed video today but couldn’t find anything so I went with my second favorite topic, the supernatural! To be more specific, we’ll be watching a video about life after death! Do you believe in life after death or do you think it just ends when we eventually pass away? I can tell you I definitely believe in the afterlife. Let’s get to the featured sentence first and then I can tell you about this crazy near-death experience my own friend went through!

Today’s featured sentence:
These "zombie genes" would grow arm-like appendages and develop while the genes in your brain disintegrate.

I’ll say that again.

These "zombie genes" would grow arm-like appendages and develop while the genes in your brain disintegrate.

Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.

For the first word, we have
Genes
One syllable.
This one is easy but I chose this word because I’m worried the spelling will throw you listeners off. “GENES” sounds like the pants you wear, “JEANS”. Genes.

Next up, we have
Appendages
Four syllables
“A” has a short “U” sound. “PEN” sounds like the thing you write with. “DA” has a short “U” sound and “GES” also has a short “U” sound with a “J” sound to support it. Appendages.

And our last one would be,
Disintegrate
“DIS” has a short “I” sound. “IN” sounds like “IN AND OUT”. “TE” has a short “U” sound and “GRATE” sounds like the word, “GREAT”, like you’re doing “great”. Disintegrate.

Moving onto Vocabulary!

The first word is:
1. Genes
Definition
a part of the DNA in a cell that controls the physical development, behaviour, etc. of an individual plant or animal and is passed on from its parents
“She’s really beautiful! She’s got some good genes.”

Next word,
2. Appendage
Definition
something that exists as a smaller and less important part of something larger
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“The elephant’s trunk is a flexible appendage that is used for a multitude of tasks.”

And lastly,
3. Disintegrate
Definition:
to become weaker or be destroyed by breaking into small pieces
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“Many meteors disintegrate during their passage through the atmosphere.”

I hope everyone is listening to this during the day! I’d be too scared to listen to this topic during the night. If it helps, just remind yourself that it’s Christmas! Also, go watch Home Alone! It’s something I must do every Christmas.
Ok, so for my story, I’ll have to talk about my friend who currently lives in Vancouver. My friend, who I used to work out with every day when I lived in Vancouver, was dead for 8 minutes! Literally! His heart stopped beating for 8 minutes and if it wasn’t for an AED, my friend wouldn’t be here today. The crazy thing is that his heart stopped beating while he was on the treadmill. I was his emergency contact but when that happened, I was in Toronto at the time so I had to contact his family members for him. Once he recovered, I asked him what he saw in those 8 minutes. He told me that he was led by a little girl to a futuristic building in a grassy field. Right before they reached the building, he woke up. He only saw the back of the little girl so he didn’t get a chance to see what she looked like but he remembered the color of her hair vividly (vividly meaning very clearly). He told me he suspected it might have been a child he and his ex-girlfriend could have had many years ago. He ended up asking his ex-girlfriend, had they had a child, what color would the child’s hair be? The ex said that it would definitely be the color he remembered seeing during those 8 minutes. My buddy didn’t tell her he was technically dead for 8 minutes though which makes the story even crazier.
Crazy story right? I get chills whenever I talk about it.

Alright, I don’t want to keep you guys too long since it’s Christmas day after all! Get your recordings in and enjoy the holidays! This is Hubert signing out from another episode of the Pronunciation Challenge. Merry Christmas!
