TRANSCRIPT
What’s up, VoiceTubers? Leila here. Do you ever get so mad, so unbelievably angry that you just want to break something? Sometimes this kind of anger in others can be scary and hard to understand, but if you’ve ever gotten to this point yourself, you know that this kind of animalistic, primal anger can just take over and make you do things that you wouldn’t do if you could think straight. That’s why it’s really important to have a healthy outlet for this anger. Today’s video is about a really incredible outlet for anger. No, it isn’t therapy. Check out the video if you haven’t already. I gotta tell you, it looks like a lot of fun.
In the meantime, let’s get to the Sentence of the Day:
Unfortunately, in our society, dealing with the very normal and numerous frustrations or angers of everyday life in such destructive and primal ways is not at all accepted among civilized society.
Pronunciation tips:
1. "with the" /wɪðə/ (Link these words together.)
2. "frustration" /frʌsˈtreɪ.ʃən/ (Let's break it down into 3 syllables.)
3. "civilized" /ˈsɪv.əl.aɪzd/ (Let's break it down into 3 syllables.)
Vocabulary:
1. frustration (n.) KK: /͵frʌsˋtreʃən/ IPA: /frʌsˈtreɪ.ʃən/
the feeling of being annoyed or less confident because you cannot achieve what you want, or something that makes you feel like this
After an hour and a half of troubleshooting with customer service over the phone, I just had to go for a walk to get out my frustration.
2a. destructive (adj.) KK: /dɪˋstrʌktɪv/ IPA: /dɪˈstrʌk.tɪv/
causing, or able to cause, damage
I understand that you were angry, but I need you to find a less destructive way of handling your anger, instead of just yelling at me.
Okay, but wait, what does damage mean?
2b. damage (n.) KK: /ˋdæmɪdʒ/ IPA: /ˈdæm.ɪdʒ/
harm or injury
The sound of the crash was loud, but actually the damage to my car was pretty light.
3. primal (adj.) KK: /ˋpraɪm!/ IPA: /ˈpraɪ.məl/
basic and relating to an early stage of development
When the mouse ran across the kitchen floor, my mom let out a primal scream and I just about died laughing.
Talking about primal anger and the need to express it in some kind of physical way reminds me of this one time when I was still teaching. We were scheduled to go out on a field trip one day, and my students were super excited. We were lined up at the door, ready to get on the school buses when, at the very last second, my manager said the field trip was canceled. Why? Who knows. It didn’t matter. In that split second, I watched all of my students’ faces change from looks of excitement to disappointment and anger.
As I moved them back into our classroom, I knew I had to act fast if I didn’t want a classroom full of screaming children. I grabbed a bunch of their art smocks and rolled them up into a make-shift pillow.
"Are you angry because we can’t go on the field trip," I asked my students?
"YEAH!" they all shouted back.
"I am, too. Let me show you what I do when I feel angry. It’s not okay to take it out on other people, but I can take it out on this pillow."
I sat down on the ground and hit the pillow with both fists, again and again, pretending to scream like a crazy cartoon character. My students watched me wide-eyed, and a couple laughed.
"You can do it, too, if you want. Come line up over here and you can have a turn. When you feel better, you can sit at the table and draw a picture."
Everyone lined up for a chance to beat their anger out onto this pillow. I re-stuffed and rerolled the pillow after each child had a turn, and one by one I saw my students change from kids on the edge of a meltdown to kids happily and quietly coloring.
How do you release your anger in a healthy way? Let me know in the comments. And as always, hit that record button when you’re ready with your sentence. Catch ya next time.

☺Unfortunately, in our society, dealing with the very normal and numerous frustrations or angers of everyday life in such destructive and primal ways is not at all accepted among civilized society.
