Have you ever set a goal for yourself and felt like you couldn't stop until reaching it? Do you always think that you can be better and better? There is a group of people who always work their nights out, even when no one requires them to do so. They always work hard to do everything perfectly. Others may label them as "perfectionists" and think they are super successful, even seeing them as their role models. But sometimes, being so perfect could have some drawbacks. You may be wondering, "What could be so bad about trying to be perfect?" Doesn't everyone want to be perfect? Well, let's check out the video to know more about the dark side of perfectionism.

Let’s get to the sentence of the day.

Sentence

It is rooted in self-hatred—sparked by memories of being disapproved of or neglected by those who should more fairly have esteemed us warmly in childhood.
它源自於對自我的厭惡,並受到幼年時不被認同,或被理應更加溫柔對待我們的人們所忽視的記憶激發出來。

Pronunciation tips

1. self-hatred (the pronunciation of "tre")
2. neglected (the first "e" pronounced as ə )
3. esteemed (the pronunciation of "e" and "ee")

Vocabulary

1. rooted adj. [ˋrutɪd] /ˈruː.t̬ɪd/
having developed from something
從…發展而來
Eg. His insecurity is rooted in his low self-esteem. 他的不安全感源自於自信低落。

2. spark v. [spɑrk] /spɑːrk/
to cause the start of something, especially an argument or fighting
引起,導致,觸發
Eg. This mass demonstration was sparked by a small incident that happened in Australia. 這次大規模示威是由澳洲的一個小事件所引發的。

3. neglect v. [nɪgˋlɛkt] /nɪˈɡlekt/
to not give enough care or attention to people or things that are your responsibility
疏忽照顧;忽視,疏忽
Eg. You shouldn't neglect your duty. You might get fired. 你不應該忽視你的職責。你可能會被解僱。

That's all for today's episode. Perfect, this word is a little bit heavy for me. Sometimes, I can't help but think that if I don't reach the goal, does that mean I'm worthless? Wanting to be perfect isn't a bad thing, but sometimes you need to allow yourself to be wrong. No one always does everything right or perfectly. Just like the speaker said in the video, "it is asking too much for us to examine ourselves every time we hand in a report, take a test or serve a customer." Making mistakes, failing, and starting again are the correct steps towards success. Failing is just another word for growing. You will still be the same person without those trophies and medals, and there will be someone who loves you just the way you are. Embrace those imperfections in your life. Alright, have a nice weekend and take some rest. Don't forget to record today's sentence, and hope you've enjoyed today's content. I'm Nina, see you in 2022.

☺It is rooted in self-hatred—sparked by memories of being disapproved of or neglected by those who should more fairly have esteemed us warmly in childhood.
它源自於對自我的厭惡,這種自我厭惡是因為在我們的記憶之中,小時候一直是不被認同,或被理應更加溫柔對待我們的人們所忽視。
【心得】自我厭惡真的是種很啃蝕人心的負能量,學習欣賞自己的特質,不要一直挑自己的毛病也很重要。
【Fun Sing一下】黃玠瑋-喜歡一個人(唱一下最近聽到的新歌^^,現在很多新歌手我都沒聽過:p)
