“Climate Change is no longer some far-off problem; it is happening here, it is happening now.” - Barack Obama
*Fart noise*. Oh, excuse me. I just farted. That wasn’t pleasant, was it? I mean, it wasn’t pleasant for the person who had to smell that fart. Usually, a fart stinks and we are disgusted by the smell or we can even lose our appetite. However, did you know it’s also one of the leading causes of global warming?! Farts are killing our planet! These farts aren’t coming from humans though. Animals and insects are capable of farting as well! Do you know which animal is responsible for most of our planet’s greenhouse gases? Watch on to find out, and then come back for today’s featured sentence!
Today’s featured sentence:
“Seals and sea lions can't help their funky flatulence, but some animals deploy their farts strategically.”
I’ll say that again.
“Seals and sea lions can't help their funky flatulence, but some animals deploy their farts strategically.”
Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.
For the first word, we have
Flatulence
Three syllables.
“Fla” has the short “a” sound. “Tu” sounds more like “chew”, like you’re chewing food, and “lence” sounds more like “lenz”. Flatulence.
Next word.
Deploy
Two syllables.
“De” has the phonetic “d” sound. “Ploy” has the diphthong phonetic sound of “oy”. “Ploy”. Deploy.
And our last one would be:
Strategically
Five syllables.
This sounds like four syllables, but it’s actually five. First is “stra”, which has the short “a” sound. “Te” sounds like “tee”, like a T-shirt. “Gic” sounds like “jick”. Then the last two syllables are sort of blended together to give you, “cally”, which could sound like “cully”. Strategically.
Moving onto Vocabulary!
The first word is:
1. Flatulence
Definition
gas in the stomach and bowels
Used in a sentence you could say,
“That stinks! That seal over there has had a lot of flatulence lately.”
Next word,
2. Deploy
Definition
to use something or someone, especially in an effective way
Used in a sentence you could say,
“When did he deploy the troops?”
And lastly,
3. Strategically
Definition:
in a way that helps to achieve a plan, for example in business or politics
Used in a sentence you can say:
“We must think strategically to defeat our opponents.
Outro
Cows! The leading cause of global warming from farts is cows! Who would’ve thought?! That does make sense though. We also clear out a bunch of rainforests to raise cows. If anything, the beef industry is killing our planet, not cows. Don’t worry guys, I’m not gonna preach to everyone on what not to eat, after all, I am also a meat- eater myself, but perhaps we can learn to control our consumption of beef to a lesser degree. We only have one planet, guys, so let’s try and take better care of it!
On another note, I had no idea that snakes could fart! I’m kind of curious as to what they smell like, but I also wouldn’t want to find out! The insect that can kill termites with their farts is pretty cool, too!. Ha, I feel like a child again talking about this subject. Anyways, for the next episode, I’ll be diving into the topic of how Hitler came to power! I was always a big fan of history so this is a topic very interesting to me and hopefully for you too! Tune into the next episode to find out more! Now do me a favor and do your recordings! That’s it for today’s Pronunciation Challenge. See you in the next episode!

◆ if anything : 其實是這樣 used when saying that what people may believe is not true, and the opposite may be true:
He's not thin -- if anything he's rather on the plump(豐滿的) side. 他可不瘦--按說還算有點胖呢。
I'd say he was more like his father, if anything. 若非要說出像誰不可來, 我倒認為他略微像他父親。
