Introduction:
Hi guys, today I’d like to talk to you about clothes. Or more specifically, the way clothes make us feel. You probably know that feeling – you’ve done some shopping and you’re back home with some hand picked clothing items. Looking at them hanging in your wardrobe makes you super happy. Clothes give you a new way to express yourselves, and they allow you to be protected from the weather in style. My point is, clothes have different uses in our lives, other than just covering our bodies. It might be a fashion statement, or an artistic or cultural declaration.
A few weeks back, I was watching the news on the Tokyo Olympics and there was a segment about some female athletes demanding for a new uniform. Many of them decided that instead of the usual leotards, they prefer to wear a unitard, which is an all-over skin tight suit that covers the legs and body. They expressed that wearing a more covering outfit would make them feel more comfortable, and it’s their statement against sexualization in gymnastics. So – clothes can also be used as an ideological or political tool.

There is also a lighter side to this. Sometimes clothes are just a “feel good” tool, they just make us feel good about ourselves! They add color and design to our appearance, they sometimes help us feel like we belong to a certain group, and at other times make us feel unique. We can decide how to dress depending on our mood.

So – as we can see, clothes are a very important social tool. They help us declare to the people around us how we feel, what we like, where we belong, etc. A well-known stand up comedian once said that he enjoys wearing well-tailored suits on stage because they make him feel prepared and portray that feeling to the audience as well. When someone is wearing a well thought out, well designed piece of clothing, it says a lot about how committed they are to looking good. And that reflects on how serious they are about their craft as well. The opposite is true as well. If someone shows up at a job interview wearing flip-flops, a tacky t-shirt and shorts, that reflects on their personality and how serious they take themselves as well. Come on, at least make an effort for a job interview, right?!
So we can learn a lot about a person from the way he or she dresses. People with flamboyant personalities tend to choose very colorful and modern designs. Fundamental religious people wear more conventional clothing, usually in just one color. These are just some examples of how clothes are used to make ideological and social statements.
