Intro:
Today we’re talking about delicious dogs. No, not pet dogs! We’re talking about hot dogs! Call them frankfurters, sausages, or whatever you like. But these aren’t just any old run-of-the-mill hot dogs, oh no no! These are Japadogs, which represent the combination of both Japanese and Canadian culture. It’s a truly unique video and I suggest you check it out. As a Canadian who used to live in Japan, I have my own thoughts about Japadogs, but I’ll save those for later. For now, let’s look at today’s featured sentence:

Sentence:
On the menu, you'll find dogs with an assortment of traditional Japanese flavors, such as grated radish, bonito flakes, and nori.

Pronunciation Tips:

Dogs /dogz/ - short o, s has a z sound
An assortment of (linking words)
Bonito - three syllables, long o, long e, and long o

Vocab:
Assortment (n.) KK: əˋsɔrtmənt IPA: əˈsɔːrt.mənt
各種各樣;混合;雜錦

An assortment is a group of different types of something. Here’s an example sentence: “I wasn’t sure which flowers you like, so I bought an assortment to put in the bouquet.”

Grated (adj.) KK: gret IPA: ɡreɪt
磨碎,擦碎(食物)
Grated means food that has been rubbed against a grater in order to cut it into a lot of small pieces. For example, “Grated parmesan cheese is a popular topping for spaghetti.”

Bonito (n.) KK: bəˋnito IPA: bəˈniːt̬oʊ
(日本料理常用的)鰹魚肉
A bonito is a fish, and the dried flesh of this fish is often used in Japanese cooking. In English, often the word ‘bonito’ is simply meant to refer to the dried flakes of bonito flesh. You sometimes hear it called ‘bonito flakes’. It Japanese it’s called katsuobushi. Here’s an example sentence: “Mayonnaise and bonito are popular toppings for okonomiyaki.”

Outro:

While I had never heard of Japadog before watching this video, the concept doesn’t completely surprise me. Japanese have a long history of taking aspects of other cultures and making it their own, and this also applies to food. In Tokyo I ate squid ink pizza, wasabi potato chips and even green-tea flavored KitKat bars. But I think my favorite, favorite western-inspired Japanese dish has to be omelette rice, which combines fried rice with eggs and ketchup. Yummy! But enough about me, I want to know about you! What are your favorite hot dog toppings? What is your favorite Japanese food? Let me know in the comments below, and don’t forget to do your recording! I’m Jonathan for VoiceTube. I’ll catch you next time!
