Hey folks, Ken here. Today, we’re gonna talk about Wi-Fi. Now, Wi-Fi stands for wireless fidelity, which basically means to connect an electronic device, such as your laptop or smartphones, to the internet without using wires. Modern life seems to have become much more inseparable from Wi-Fi since the recent decade, and it’s certainly difficult to imagine life without the internet. But you know what’s worse than no internet at all? That’s right, slow internet connection and weak Wi-Fi signals. For example, when you’re trying to join a meeting and attend an online class and the internet speed becomes so slow, laggy, that’s what really drives people crazy.
But hold on, don’t smash your router just yet, let’s take a second to learn how it all works. Wi-Fi waves are basically just radio waves, so that's the same as the electromagnetic waves you pick up with your cell phone or a radio. Wi-Fi signals are broadcasted via a router, which is usually what you’ll refer to as “Wi-Fi machine or Wi-Fi box”. But wifi waves are fairly short. The conventional ones are even only 12 cm long, so if you have an old router model, you’d probably know why it runs so slow. And also, the signal gets a lot weaker as it gets further from the router, they often get absorbed and blocked by walls and metal surfaces.
That’s why, if you only have one router, the way you position your router makes a huge difference in how strong your signal is throughout your house. It is recommended that you place your router near the center of your house so that it sends the signal out in equal strength in all directions. And then, put it out somewhere off-ground in the open instead of placing it in a closet, because the Wi-Fi wave might be blocked. Also, most routers have two antennas on them, and ideally you could position one of them vertically and one horizontally to enhance your signal connection.
Before you try this out, here’s our sentence of the day:
Most routers have two antennas on them, and ideally you could position one of them vertically and one horizontally. 大多數的路由器有兩根天線。理想上一根應與地面垂直,另一根則與地面水平。
[Vocabulary words]
1. antenna a rod, wire, or other device used to transmit or receive radio or television signals
Ex: The reception is very poor. Let me adjust the antenna. 收訊太差了。讓我調整一下天線。
*Animals and insects have antennas(觸角)as well.
2. vertical standing or pointing straight up or at an angle of 90° to a horizontal surface
Ex: Rain or shine, our flagpole stands vertically above the ground. 不論風雨,我們的旗桿垂直屹立於地。
3. horizontal parallel to the surface or ground.
Ex: Keep the patient horizontal with the feet slightly raised. 讓病人平躺,雙腳略微抬高。
Alright, that’s all the time we have for today. If you live in a house with 3 to 4 stories (floors), Then you should probably consider getting a set of mesh wifi routers, which passes on the wifi wave from your internet modem, so you can have equally strong internet signals on each floor.
Hope you all have good wifi connections. This is Ken Miao, and I’ll see you again next week.
