Hello everyone! My name is Jonathan, and I’m back with another episode of VoiceTube’s Pronunciation Challenge. Wow! Today's video was such a fascinating story! Of course, I know the brands Adidas and Puma, but I had no idea about the history between them. The video is definitely worth a watch! Right now, however, let's take a look at today's featured sentence.

The brothers sued each other many, many times over the years over all sorts of design and trademark issues, costing each other a fortune in lawyers and suits.
兩兄弟在那些年不斷地互相提出訴訟,有關於各式的設計以及商標問題,在律師和官司上所費不貲。

Pronunciation Tips:
Sorts of /sorts-uv/
design - short e, z sound, long i
Lawyers /ˈlɑː.jɚs/

Vocabulary:
1. sue (v.) 控告,對…提起訴訟 KK [su] IPA /su/

Cambridge dictionary: To institute legal proceedings against a person or institution, typically for redress.

For example, let's pretend I have a house with a fence around it. Ralph, who drank too many beers and really shouldn't be driving, steers his car the wrong way and drives right into my fence! Repairing the fence is going to cost a lot of money, so I can sue Ralph for damaging my fence. If Ralph refuses to pay, we go to court and a judge decides if Ralph pays, and for how much. Here it is in a sentence: “Since the accident was caused by a faulty airbag, he sued the car manufacturer and won.”

suit (n.) 訴訟,訟案 [sut] /sut/

In this case, “suit” is referring to a lawsuit, which the Cambridge dictionary defines as "A claim or dispute brought to a law court for adjudication." So, when one company sues another company for a lot of money and they go to court to settle it, we call their case a lawsuit, or suit for short.
Here is an example sentence: “The suit was set to go to trial, but ultimately the two companies settled for 1.4 million.”

2. issue (n.) 問題;議題 [ˋɪʃjʊ] /ˈɪʃu/
In this video, 'issue' is referring to a problem. What are the two companies suing each other over? The two companies are accusing each other of infringing on each other's designs and trademarks, so they are suing over design and trademark issues. Here is the word in a sentence: "I really love my new headphones. At first I had an issue getting them to connect over Bluetooth, but once I resolved that, they've been perfect!"

3. fortune (n.) 一大筆錢;大量財産 [ˋfɔrtʃən] /ˈfɔrʧən/
A fortune just means a lot of money. Here is an example sentence: "This movie theater is huge! It must have cost a fortune to build it." 這個電影院很大!它應該花了一大筆錢才蓋好的。

And now we've come to the end of this week's pronunciation challenge. I want to hear about you! What kind of shoes do you wear? Personally, I'm more of a Converse guy myself, although I do also own a pair of Doc Marten boots. Are there any other brands you feel strongly about? Let me know in the comments below! And while you're at it, don't forget to record your sentence and let me hear your beautiful English. I'm Jonathan for VoiceTube, and I'll catch you next time!

The brothers sued(/suː/控告v.) each other many, many times over(超過prep.) the years over(關於prep.) all sorts(類型n.) of design(/dɪˈzaɪn/設計n.) and trademark(/ˈtreɪd.mɑːrk/商標n.) issues(/ˈɪʃ.uː/議題n.), costing(/kɑːst/花費v.) each other a fortune in lawyers(/ˈlɔɪ.ər/律師) and suits(/suːt/訴訟).
(以下翻譯取自unickname) 兩兄弟在那些年期間不斷地針對各式的設計和商標問題互告對方,彼此在律師費和訴訟費上都花了很多的錢。

0:54 Wow! Today's video was such a fascinating(a.吸引人的) story! Of course, I know the brands(品牌n.) Adidas and Puma, but I had no idea about the history between them. The video is definitely worth(v.值得) a watch! Right now, however, let's take a look at today's featured(精選的a.) sentence.

1. sue [su] v. 控告,對…提起訴訟 = To institute(/ˈɪn.stə.tuːt/開始v.) legal proceedings(/proʊˈsiː.dɪŋz/一系列事件) against a person or institution(/ˌɪn.stəˈtuː.ʃən/團體n.), typically for redress(/rɪˈdres/補償n.).

For example, let's pretend(v.假裝) I have a house with a fence(n.圍籬) around it. Ralph, who drank too many beers and really shouldn't be driving, steers(v.駕駛) his car the wrong way and drives right into my fence! Repairing(v.修理) the fence is going to cost a lot of money, so I can sue(v.控告) Ralph for damaging(v.毀損) my fence. If Ralph refuses(v.拒絕) to pay, we go to court(n.法院) and a judge(法官n.) decides(v.決定) if Ralph pays, and for how much.

Since the accident was caused by a faulty(/ˈfɑːl.t̬i/有缺陷的a.) airbag(安全氣囊), he sued the car manufacturer(/ˌmæn.jəˈfæk.tʃɚ.ɚ/製造商) and won.

2. suit [sut] n. 訴訟,訟案 = lawsuit
In this case, “suit” is referring to a lawsuit, which the Cambridge dictionary defines as "A claim(/kleɪm/聲稱n.) or dispute(/dɪˈspjuːt/ 糾紛n.) brought to a law court for adjudication(/əˌdʒuː.dəˈkeɪ.ʃən/判決n.)." So, when one company sues another company for a lot of money and they go to court to settle(v.解決) it, we call their case a lawsuit, or suit for short.

The suit was *set to go to trial(審判n.), but ultimately the two companies settled for 1.4 million.

■ adjudication /əˌdʒuː.dəˈkeɪ.ʃən/ n. 判決
The legality(/liːˈɡæl.ə.t̬i/合法性) of the transaction(/trænˈzæk.ʃən/交易n.) is still under adjudication in the courts.

■ set to (phr.) : 幹勁十足地開始做;毅然開始;開始大吃; 開始毆打(或爭吵)
If we all set to, we should be able to finish the job in a week.
如果我們都能認真做,就能在一星期內完成這項工作。

2. issue [ˋɪʃjʊ] n. 問題;議題
In this video, 'issue' is referring to a problem. What are the two companies suing each other over? The two companies are accusing(v.指控) each other of infringing(/ɪnˈfrɪndʒ/違反v.) on each other's designs and trademarks, so they are suing over design and trademark issues.

■ infringe /ɪnˈfrɪndʒ/ v. 違反,違背(規定、法律等)
They infringed building regulations.
他們違反了建築規章。

I really love my new headphones(/ˈhed.foʊnz/耳機n.). At first(一開始) I had an issue getting them to connect(v.連接) over Bluetooth(藍芽), but once I resolved(v.解決) that, they've been perfect!

3. fortune [ˋfɔrtʃən] n. 一大筆錢;大量財産
A fortune just means a lot of money.
This movie theater is huge! It must have cost a fortune to build it.

And now we've come to the end of this week's pronunciation challenge. I want to hear about you! What kind of shoes do you wear? Personally, I'm more of a Converse guy myself, although I do also own a pair of Doc Marten boots(靴子). Are there any other brands you feel strongly about? Let me know in the comments below! And while you're at it, don't forget to record your sentence and let me hear your beautiful English.
