Thanks Selina & everyone!==> 0:28 I know last-week episode was a bit of downer(n.令人沮喪的事), so this week, let’s change it up and talk about some English speaking techniques. I’m honestly really glad I found this video, because these are exactly the tips that help me improve my English speaking skills. When I first took the oral(n.口述的) training class in college, the first thing my professor said to me was slow down. And me, you know, being a rebel(n.叛逆者), of course, I refused to take her advice. I just thought my professor was annoying and didn’t know what she’s talking about. But then, during one oral presentation(n.報告), I looked at my classmates and found everyone looking confused and bored. As it turned out(果然如此), I was speaking incredibly fast that no one could understood a word. That’s when I learn to really slow down and make sure every word is pronounced clearly. So remember don’t crank up(加速) your speaking rate at the expense(n.耗費) of clarity(n.清晰易懂), I learned that at a hard way. Grammar is another thing I used to(過去曾經) care a lot about, I’m sure many of you share this concern(n.擔心). English is our second language and we’re afraid of being laughed at if we messed up(把…弄亂) all grammar. But the truth is no one really notices our grammar mistakes unless you make a big deal(大事) out of it. If you accidentally said something wrong, just roll with it(適應) and move on. Don’t go back and change it. It’s okay to make mistakes once in a while(偶爾), that’s how we learn and grow. Just make sure you don’t make the same mistakes next time. This video also mentions the third tip to improve your fluency(n.順暢) and this’s our sentence of the day: “Avoid complication and try to express yourself as simple as possible. Focus on the core message of what you want to say.” So basically, you need to be precise(a.[prɪˋsaɪs]清晰的) and accurate([ˋækjərɪt]a.準確的), and that’s how you can communicate effectively(有效地).
1-1. complication [͵kɑmpləˋkeʃən] (n.) 使情況複雜化的事物
*The heavy snow added further complications to our camping trip.
1-2. complicated [ˋkɑmplə͵ketɪd] (adj.) 複雜的,麻煩的
*The situation was so complicated that we decided to cancel our plan.
2-1. express [ɪkˋsprɛs] (v.) 陳述,表達
*Sometimes I find it hard to express myself for fear that I will get laughed at.
2-2. expression [ɪkˋsprɛʃən] (n.) 表達;表情
*Other people can easily understand my emotion for my facial(a.臉的) expression.
3-1. core [kor] (n.) 核心,關鍵
*In order to fix the issue, we need to find out the core of the problem.
3-2. core [kor] (v.) 去果核
*Core the peaches so that children won't accidentally swallow the pit(n.果核).
That’s it for today’s episode. I really recommend you check out this video, and remember speaking English is supposed (a.應當的) to be fun and spontaneous([spɑnˋtenɪəs]a.自發的), so don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Language is a way of communication. And as long as(只要) you can talk to others, the nuances([njuˋɑns]n.細微差別) don’t matter(v.要緊) that much. What do you think of this video? Does it help? Tell me information in the comment section below, and don’t forget to leave your recordings. In the meantime(同時), stay safe. And I’ll see you next week.
