  • Did you know, of the people who actually set New Year's resolutions, 80% of them won't make it past the first week in February?

  • Another 12% will fail sometime throughout the year and only 8% will actually reach their goals.

  • So if you're like me and you love the idea of a New Year and all of the new possibilities, but you don't like the idea of failing, I've got 3 alternatives to New Year's resolutions that you can try instead.

  • I have always had a love-hate relationship with New Year's resolutions.

  • I love goals.

  • I love that magical time between Christmas and New Year's, but I'm also a little bit of a cynic and I know that resolutions tend to fail.

  • So what do I do?

  • I actually do these a little bit different.

  • Instead of setting resolutions, I have three different alternatives to resolutions that I'm going to walk you through.

  • And I think it's because I do resolutions so differently that I'm actually in that 8% every year.

  • So I'm going to walk you through these 3 and I encourage you, don't try to do all three, but pick one that makes the most sense for you right now.

  • The first alternative to New Year's resolutions that I want you to consider is something called a kiss goal.

  • A kiss goal is where you're looking at the habits in your life, the ones, hopefully, that are moving you forward towards the life that you want, and you're finding one habit that you want to keep.

  • This is something that's already working and you want to make sure that you set things up for it to continue to work in the New Year.

  • The next is a habit that you want to increase.

  • This is, again, something that's already working, so you're not making big changes with these first two.

  • You're finding something that's already working, but it's time to just step it up a notch or two.

  • The next habit is one that you want to stop and then one that you want to start in its place.

  • So really what you're doing is maintaining two habits, increasing one of them, and starting one habit while you're stopping another.

  • So there's really only three things that you're focusing on here.

  • It's really important that your stop habit and your start habit are related because what usually happens is, we decide to stop a habit and then we leave a hole in its place.

  • And when we do that, either someone else's agenda will come in and fill it, or we end up picking up that same habit again because there's an open space there.

  • So really, it's important that you're stopping a habit, but you're looking at, "What am I going to be doing instead of that habit?"

  • So again, it's a kiss goal.

  • One habit to keep, one habit to increase, one habit to stop and one habit to start in its place.

  • Drop me a comment below if you already have an idea in mind of what those habits might be for yourself.

  • The second alternative to New Year's resolutions is to choose a guiding word.

  • These have really gained a lot of popularity in the last few years and it's one of my favorites.

  • I actually started this practice probably close to about 15 years ago, and I've had words like shine, abundance, confidence, whatever it might be that's really serving you in that moment.

  • What you're doing is choosing one word that's going to help guide your decisions throughout the year.

  • This really simplifies the idea of resolutions because it's easy to remember, and it's something that you're continually just coming back to as a touchstone,

  • again, to help you guide your decisions.

  • Now, choosing your guiding word is more than just pulling something out of a hat.

  • There's a really particular process that I recommend.

  • And if you subscribe to this channel, my next video is going to go through that process, show you how I choose these guiding words, and then what I do with them once I choose them to make sure that they actually work for me.

  • Again, that's coming up in the next video, so be sure you're subscribed, but also hit the bell for notifications and drop me a comment below if you've ever done this practice before and what some of your guiding words have been.

  • The next alternative to New Year's resolutions is a tough one.

  • It is not for the faint of heart, I'm not going to lie.

  • But it's also been one of my favorites for the last few years, and that is a 365 challenge.

  • A 365 challenge is where you choose one habit that you're going to try to do every single day for 365 days straight.

  • I've had challenges around drinking 64 ounces of water every single day.

  • I've had challenges around flossing every single night, taking supplements every day, and this past year it's been meditating every single day.

  • Again, this is not for the faint of heart.

  • If you're struggling with resolutions, doing a 365 challenge may actually be more difficult.

  • But for me, I actually found it to be easier because it was something that I was consistently doing every day, where if it was something like, go to the gym, I'm not doing that every day.

  • So it's really easy to start skipping days and get out of the routine of it, whereas with something like this, it's really easy to stick with it because it's happening every single day.

  • Comment below and let me know if you think a 365 challenge would be harder for you or easier for you, just based on the consistency of it.

  • By the way, if you're brand new here, my name is Tara Wagner, and I'm what's called a belief breakthrough coach.

  • I've been coaching women over the past 10 years to crush their goals, not their soul, by helping them overcome the limiting beliefs and bad habits getting in their way.

  • And if that sounds like your jam, be sure to subscribe, hit the bell for notifications and then check out the goodies I have below to help you get started.

  • Then be sure to watch this video on the four New Year's goals you're forgetting to set, and this video that YouTube just thinks you'll like.

  • Thanks so much for watching.

  • I'll see you in the next one.
