- Still set on writing, he managed to land his first writing job in the military, as the sports editor of the Command Courier, despite having no formal experience, which he lied about. A couple years into military service, Thompson was recommended by his commanding officer to take an early leave with honorable discharge. His superiors ultimately found his rebellious and conceited attitude less than optimal for military conditions.
