- Kyoto to Tokyo which was called Edo and they'd follow the Tokaido route and so they needed to get some energy replenish themselves and you know sugar is a good way to do that or another way is with mochi the other thing they specialize in here and this has actually got a really fun name it's called chikara mochi so if you know any Japanese chikara means like energy and so when people were traveling and they were exhausted they'd eat this mochi to get their you know power back and it's coated with kinako which is like a sugary soy bean powder i heard they make their mochi fresh every single morning and they pound it right here which is usually typically done at like new year's but it's really cool to hear they do it daily it's really fresh and they've also char grilled it i think there's different flavors as well so i went kinako but they also have soy sauce as well as black sesame this is one of my favorite places in Hakone so far and in this Kanagawa west area so i think if you get the chance to come on the tour and experience it it's just honestly amazing and i feel like i'm in a Ghibli movie or another world i can't believe i was in Tokyo just yesterday ah and one other thing inside they have really cool seating too and i think in the winter they kind of like heat it up like there's a fire going but yeah this is this is awesome check it out if you can right now i'm at Daiyuzan Saijoji temple because i'm here for a temple stay and this place has over 600 years of history i can't wait to do this and i need to go meet up with one of the monks who actually lives here and he'll take me on a bit of a tour around so let's get going what i learned at this temple is that you can see quite a few of the Tengu statues and for those who don't know Tengu are actually creatures from Japanese folklore it's said that one of the priests called Doryo-san changed into a Tengu to help build this temple by lifting up rocks and finding water and it's still believed that the Tengu flew deep into the mountains to protect the temple forever for the actual tour there's a guided English tour with a monk plus brochures covering it in detail
