Hey folks, Ken here. Today we’ll discuss a rather serious topic — U.S. gun laws. Let’s take you back to May 18, 2018. A gunman entered a high school in Santa Fe, Texas and opened fire. Flo Rice, a substitute teacher in Santa Fe High School, was shot 6 times in both her legs when she was teaching gym class. Rice said, “I look down and I realize in my pants⏤I had bloody holes in my pants and I realized: I'm shot.” The 18-year-old gunman ended up killing 10 people before he was finally arrested by the police.
You might wonder, why does it seem so difficult to put an end to this madness that keeps on occurring? It is true that over the past few decades, federal legislation on guns has been rare. But in state legislatures, however, mass shootings have actually led to thousands of new gun laws. In 2020, a study tried to determine "the impact of mass shootings on gun policy" within 25 years. Then, they looked at gun legislation passed during that period of time⏤over 3,000 laws across all 50 states, and discovered a hidden pattern. Mass shootings didn't have any statistically significant effect on the number of laws passed by Democrats. While for Republican legislatures, a mass shooting roughly doubles the number of laws enacted that loosen gun restrictions in the next year. To make it easier for you, buying guns has strangely become much easier after every mass shooting that has happened. Weird huh? I know.
In the meantime, Flo Rice and her husband, Scot Rice, have been pushing for legislation in response to the Santa Fe shooting. They also pushed to make it harder to buy ammunition online. Because, apparently, you’ll have to show your ID to buy alcohol, but if you want to buy a gun, just go online and tick the box that says “Yes, I’m 18 and above.” and you’ll have it delivered to your doorsteps the next day. It’s that dangerously simple. You would have thought that it is common sense for people to support banning guns, but polling showed only a small minority of Texans supported loosening gun laws, and just over half supported tightening them. There’s still a long way to go.
In June 2022, in the aftermath of the Uvalde shooting in Texas, President Biden signed the most significant federal gun bill in 30 years. The bill urges all states to pass red flag laws that would allow authorities to take firearms away from a person who courts deem dangerous. However, it can’t force them to pass it. The power still belongs to each individual state; countless innocent lives have been, and always will depend on state governments’ decisions on gun laws. May God bless us all.
