Intro: Hi, everyone. I’m Tera, and this is VoiceTube’s Pronunciation Challenge. Today we’ll be talking about working in London as a foreigner. The United Kingdom attracts people from across the globe for several reasons. On one hand, it is a country that is rich in culture. In the field of science, there is Isaac Newton; speaking of biology, there is Charles Darwin; when it comes to literature, there are so many great writers and epic literary works. There are also The Beatles, John Lennon, and J.K. Rowling. On the other hand, The UK is the home to top universities and is a land of opportunity. The above-mentioned are reasons that propel people to study and work in this country. If you also love it and would like to know more about working in its capital city, London, you definitely don’t want to miss it! And now, time for our daily sentences.
Featured sentence: Back in my permanent job days, I had to learn how to budget a little bit better to make that one monthly payment stretch a little bit further.
[I’ll say it slowly again.] [Now time for some pronunciation tips]
Tips: permanent: three syllables with the stress on the first one. Notice that the vowels of the second and the third syllable are reduced, so they become /ə/ sounds. “per-ma-nent”. budget: two syllables with the stress on the first one. Here the “dg” forms a /dʒ/ sound, and the letter “e” in the second syllable should be pronounced as /ɪ/. Again, “bud-get”. better: two syllables with the stress on the first one. “tt” actually sounds like a quick “d”. In linguistic terms, we call it “flat t”. More examples: “pretty”, “city”.
[Ok, here are some vocabulary words from the sentence.] Vocab: permanent (adj.) KK [ˋpɝmənənt] IPA /ˈpɝː.mə.nənt/ def: lasting for a long time or forever 永久的 COVID-19 may cause some permanent damage to our bodies. 新冠肺炎有可能會對我們的身體造成一些永久的傷害。
budget (n.) KK [ˋbʌdʒɪt] IPA /ˈbʌdʒ.ɪt/ def: a plan to show how much money a person or organization will earn and how much they will need or be able to spend 預算 Congress approved the budget that will be spent on the military. 國會批准了這筆將用於軍事上的預算。
payment (n.) KK [ˋpemənt] IPA /ˈpeɪ.mənt/ def: an amount of money paid 付款 This restaurant accepts payment by credit cards. 這間餐廳可以用信用卡付款 。
stretch (v.) KK [strɛtʃ] IPA /stretʃ/ def: to cause something to reach, often as far as possible, in a particular direction 延伸;展開 The virgin forest stretches for hundreds of miles. 原始林蔓延數百哩。
Outro: Getting a working visa in the UK is not easy. Well, everyone knows it. However, the good news is that…a new visa option has been announced recently! In fact, as some of you might know, The UK has launched a new visa scheme, which is the “High Potential Individual” visa program. This program allows graduates from the top universities around the world to be eligible regardless of where they were born to work in The UK. You know what? They even don’t need a job offer before applying! Well…I know that being able to enter and then graduate from those top universities, like Harvard, Yale, Stanford…is also not easy for sure, but at least there are more ways for you to work in your favorite country, right? Alright, this is Tera, I’ll see you in another episode.
