Intro:
Hi, everyone. This is Tera. When it comes to naming children, parents usually add their blessings and expectations for them in names. Today’s video features the meanings of Asian names, in which several Asian Americans are invited to share their names in their own languages. Well, speaking of this, as Taiwanese, although my graduate colleagues and professors back in the States mostly just called me Tera, I was often asked to pronounce it for them. But, you know, Chinese phonetics and phonology are not so easy for foreign speakers, therefore, instead of focusing on the true pronunciation of the name, we usually end up discussing the meaning of it. If you would like to know more about me and my name, remember to stay tuned ‘till the second half of this episode. And, today’s sentence is…

Featured sentence: I'm glad that I have a Japanese name, and I think every time I write my name, it's a reminder of all that strength.

Tips:
1. it’s a: there’s a linking between "it’s" and "a".
2. reminder: three syllables with the stress on the second one. "ri" is /rɪ/, "min" is like "mine". Add up "der", we get "re-min-der".
3. strength: only one syllable. Notice that there will be a very, very minor /k/ sound before "th", although most of the time we do not see it in the KK or IPA.

Vocab:
glad (adj.) KK [glæd] IPA /ɡlæd/
def: pleased and happy
高興的
I’m so glad to hear from you.
很高興能聽到你的消息。

reminder (n.) KK [rɪˋmaɪndɚ] IPA /rɪˈmaɪn.dɚ/
def: a person or thing that makes you remember a particular person, event, or situation
提醒者/物;令人回憶的東西
Her inspirational story is a reminder of how big your dream can be.
她的勵志故事提醒著人們夢想可以有多大。

strength (n.) KK [strɛŋθ] IPA /streŋθ/
def: strong or powerful things
力量;長處
Knowing what your strength is and what sets you apart from others are the key to success.
知道自己的長處與知道自己與眾不同的地方為何是成功的關鍵。

Outro:
Alright, back to my name. So, the first character of my Chinese name stands for simplicity and amiability, and the second one of it has the meaning of the fragrance of flowers. Also, a little bit of my English name, Tera is primarily a female name of Italian origin meaning "earth". Well, to be honest, I love my Chinese name a lot more ‘cause it not only reminds me of the blessings my parents gave to me but also tells the story of who I am, even though these days I am called by Tera. Yeah, but both of them are fine with me. Okay, I think I have been talking about myself too much. Let’s turn the topics to your names! I would very much like to know more about you. What does your name mean either in Chinese or other languages? Share it down with me by leaving a comment. Looking forward to seeing your sharing. This is Tera. Until next time!
