Jenny's transcript!
Intro:
Hello VoiceTubers, great to have you back here again! Today we are talking about water!
Why does bottled water have an expiration date? Have you ever wondered about that? Well, the most simple answer to this question is that since water is a consumable product, it is required by law to have an expiration date printed on it. But as many of you know, unlike other foods, water doesn’t contain any sugars or proteins, therefore microbes aren’t consuming it and rotting it. However, the quality of the water does change over time. When exposed to the carbon dioxide in the air, the pH level of the water is lowered and will become a bit more acidic therefore changes the taste slightly. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles are FDA approved and are safe for storing food and beverages. If you have a habit of buying bottled water in bulk, I would suggest that you store them at room temperature or cooler, keep them away from direct sunlight and far away from household chemicals such as cleaning detergents, gasoline, or paint.
Let me tell you about other non-food items which you should keep an eye on the expiration dates at the end of my episode. But now, let’s have a listen to our sentence of the day:
Sentence:
Plastic bottles are also permeable, so water should not be stored near pesticides or gasoline.
同時,塑膠瓶具有滲透性,因此它們不應該被儲藏在靠近殺蟲劑和汽油的地方。
Pronunciation Tips:
bottle (when said quickly, sounds like bo-dal)
water (difference between Australian/British and American pronunciation)
pesticide (first i = uh, second i = ai)
gasoline (o = short uh sound)
Vocabulary:
1. permeable (adj.) KK[ˋpɝmɪəb!] IPA/ˈpɝː.mi.ə.bəl/
If a substance is permeable, it allows liquids or gases to go through it.
可滲透的;可滲入的
Example:
He used permeable building materials on purpose to capture and retain rainwater.
他刻意用可滲透式的材質來建蓋因為想要保留住雨水。
2. store (v.) KK[stor] IPA/stɔːr/
to put or keep things in a special place for use in the future
儲存;儲備;儲藏
Example:
Use this empty drawer to store your clothes while you stay here this weekend.
這周末你住這的時候,可以用這個空的抽屜來儲放你的衣服。
3. pesticide (n.) KK[ˋpɛstɪ͵saɪd] IPA/ˈpes.tə.saɪd/
a chemical substance used to kill harmful insects, small animals, wild plants, and other unwanted organisms
殺蟲劑,農藥
Example:
Make sure you keep the pesticides out of reach of young children.
記得將農藥放在小孩子拿不到的地方。
Outro
So here are some things which you may be surprised to know that they have an expiration date:
1) Car seats for little kids. Wait, what? A seat can expire?! Yes, that’s right. Especially because they can become a life-saving tool, you’re best to make sure they are current with the most updated technology and safety innovations and follow the safety regulations.
2) Sunglasses. Yep, even though you will not find an expiration date on your pair of sunnies, you should know that they do become less and less effective in blocking out UV light as time goes on.
3) Batteries. You might want to hold off buying that value pack at Costco if you seldom use batteries. Certain parts corrode over time and the lithium breaks down making it harder to transfer electricity. The older ones most probably won't function as well as fresh ones!
There are many more, but I only have time to give you three as examples.
So returning to our water topic of the day, I feel much more at ease knowing that water actually doesn’t go bad that easily unless it is not stored properly. However, I still prefer not to boil the same water over and over again so that’s why I usually use an electric jug to boil hot water only when I need it. Do you have one of those hot water machines that re-boils the water inside? Let me know if you can/can not taste any difference. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to give the pronunciation challenge a try. My name is Jenny and I’ll see you around next time!
