So, when a friend of mine was getting ready to move, she had a going-away party to celebrate. The problem was I didn’t know any of her other friends. She is WAY more social than I am, so she knows a lot of people. The day came and I just wasn’t feeling it. I didn’t have the energy to do all the stuff you have to do when meeting new people.
Before I left the house, I decided to pretend that I was a news reporter interviewing people. Whenever anyone asked me a question about myself, I found a way to answer in a brief but friendly way, and immediately turned it around so that I could ask them an open-ended question. Once I got them talking about a topic that they liked, I paraphrased what they said in my own words, and asked another follow-up question.
Before long, the party people decided to switch locations. I didn’t feel like going out to a bar, so I said a quick goodnight to my friend. Later that week, she told me that everyone was asking where I was.
"Where’d that girl go? She was so interesting!"
I was interesting? I barely said anything about myself. This active listening stuff really works!
Do you have any tips or tricks for rebuilding relationships? Let me know in the comments. And as always, hit that record button when you’re ready with your sentence. Catch ya next time.
