“That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” - Neil Armstrong.
I hope you listeners know who Neil Armstrong was. For those who don’t know, he was the first man on the moon! Hi, my name is Hubert and I’m your host for today’s Pronunciation Challenge. In today’s episode, we’ll be talking about space again! To be more specific, we’ll be watching a video about Space tourism! When we think about space travel, we usually think that only astronauts and the elite (a word we’ll be learning today) are the only ones who have access to it. However, SpaceX is trying to change all that and make space travel available for civilians! (civilians means every person like you or me who isn’t part of the armed forces or police). Space travel has always been on my mind and I always found the topic of space fascinating but I don’t think I’d be able to handle the trip up to space. I have motion sickness and can’t handle being on a boat for too long, let alone a spaceship! Alright, let’s get to the featured sentence!
Today’s featured sentence:
“Training started with trips to a human centrifuge, which tests pilots and astronauts ability to withstand the gravitational forces they'll experience during flight.”
I’ll say that again.
“Training started with trips to a human centrifuge, which tests pilots and astronauts ability to withstand the gravitational forces they'll experience during flight.”
Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.
For the first word, we have
Centrifuge
Three syllables.
“CEN”, the C here takes on an S sound so it sounds “S E N”. “TRI” has your typical “T R” sound, “TR” followed by a short U sound. Lastly, we have “FUGE” which sounds like the word, “HUGE” like it’s really big, but just cut out the H and replace it with an F sound. CENTRIFUGE.
Next up, we have
Astronaut
Three syllables
The first syllable, “A” has a short “a” sound. “STRON” has your typical “S T” combination sound but it’s followed by a short “U” sound. “NAUT”, with this, think of the words, “bought”, “thought”, and “caught”. Now just replace all those sounds with an N in front and you have NAUT. Astronaut.
And our last one would be,
Withstand
This is pretty much two words put together so you just say it quicker. “WITHSTAND” which means to remain undamaged or unaffected by.
Moving onto Vocabulary!
The first word is:
1. Centrifuge
Definition
a machine that turns a container round very quickly, causing the solids and liquids inside it to separate by centrifugal action
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“The test tube was placed inside a centrifuge.
Next word,
2. Astronaut
Definition
a person who has been trained for travelling in space
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“All my life, I have dreamt of becoming an astronaut.”
And lastly,
3. Gravitational
Definition:
in science, the force that attracts all objects towards one another
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“The sun’s gravitational pull keeps the planets orbiting around it.
Exciting times to be alive! The mere thought of going into space is fun but like I said, I’m not sure if I can handle the trip up there on my own. I’d probably make it a quarter of the way up and pass out. It would be nice to see planet Earth from your window though. Can you imagine living on another planet? What would be the first thing you build once you land? I doubt that we’ll be able to see the day we inhabit (which means to live in or occupy) another planet in our lifetimes. I once heard a theory that there are so many different universes that each one represents an alternative universe of a small decision we could have made. Can you imagine the sheer number of them? Infinity!
Alright, cool, it’s about time for me to head out but make sure you get your recordings in! Also, make sure you give me a follow on instagram @hughtran_! My name is Hubert Tran and I’ll see you on the next episode of the Pronunciation challenge! See ya!

☺Training started with trips to a human centrifuge, which tests pilots' and astronauts' ability to withstand the gravitational forces they'll experience during flight.
整個訓練從前往人體離心機開始。這個機器是用來測試飛行員和太空人對於在飛行過程中所會經歷到的地心引力的承受程度。
【心得】阿飄應該很能對抗地心引力,畢竟他們在地球上就已經會亂飄了。
