Intro:
Friendship is one of the most important parts of our social lives. But how can we know who’s a good friend and who’s not? And how many friendships can we sustain with the limited time we have? And most importantly - how do you build and make strong friendship relationships? Most of us have at least 2-3 real good friends and the rest of the people we know are considered more acquaintances than actual friends. People also have different definitions of what a good friend is. But most of us would agree that a good friend is someone who’s always there for you, and will support you in good and bad times alike. Unlike a fair-weather friend is someone who only sticks around in exciting situations and pretends to be your good friend, but they never invite you to do anything.
Often a friendship is formed by chance. It could be someone we sat next to in high school, or someone we met while waiting in a long line, or even while traveling abroad. Sometimes friendships like that form and grow over a long period of time. But many times there is a special immediate connection between two people that is hard to explain. It could be the situation those two people are in, or their personalities, but something just clicks right away. Isn’t that a special feeling?
Let’s take a listen to our sentence of the day:
Sentence:
Friendship is the dividend of gratitude that flows from an acknowledgement that one has offered something very valuable to someone.
Pronunciation Tips:
- dividend
- acknowledgement
- valuable
Vocabulary:
1. dividend (n.)
• KK[ˋdɪvə͵dɛnd] IPA /ˈdɪv.ə.dend/
(a part of) the profit of a company that is paid to the people who own shares in it
Example:
The employees were each given shares of the company stock, which would provide substantial dividends for the future years.
2. acknowledgement (n.)
• KK[əkˋnɑlɪdʒmənt] IPA /əkˈnɑː.lɪdʒ.mənt/
the fact of accepting that something is true or right
Example:
I felt happy to see nods across the room of people acknowledging my proposal ideas in the company meeting.
3. valuable (adj.)
• KK[ˋvæljʊəb!] IPA /ˈvæl.jə.bəl/
very helpful or important
Example:
Anna gained some valuable experience during her summer intern job at the law firm.
Outro:
Real friendships are actually built on trust and openness. Rather than trying to impress other people and cover our weaknesses, the best way to make strong connections and friendships is just by being the way you are and not pretending to be someone else. Being honest and open about our fears and weaknesses is also a way to create common ground with other people as most people relate more to honesty and vulnerability. After all - many of us share similar concerns and fears, and talking about them with other people is a good way to connect with them and gain their trust. I hope each of you has a good friend you can turn to and is also a good friend to someone else. Thanks for listening to this week’s episode. Don’t forget to record your sentence and enjoy the rest of your week! Bye for now.
