"Food can be expressive and therefore food can be art" - Grant Achatz
Caviar! Chocolate! Mangoes?! These are some of the most expensive foods in the world and today we’ll be using this video for today’s Pronunciation Challenge. My name is Hubert Tran and I’ll be your host today.
What was the most expensive food you ever had? Do you feel guilty about it? Well, once you see how much some of these food items are going for, I’m sure you’ll be feeling a lot better about your edible choices. (edible means something that is suitable or safe to eat) For myself, I’d say the most I ever spent on food would probably be Omakase sushi. For the frequent listeners, you would know that I recently did an episode on sushi! I definitely think it’s worth the money every once in a while. However, I do have the privilege (privilege meaning a special right or an advantage that only one group or person has) of growing up in an environment where I can afford to eat these things, as do many listeners of the Pronunciation Challenge. I’m grateful to even have a plate (plate in this context means to have food) so let’s not waste it! Alright, stay tuned for my featured sentence, and then come back to me so I can tell you about the most expensive restaurant in the world!
Today’s featured sentence:
“This edible subterranean fungus is a prized delicacy by gourmet chefs from around the world.”
I’ll say that again.
“This edible subterranean fungus is a prized delicacy by gourmet chefs from around the world.”
Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.
For the first word, we have
Edible
Three syllables.
The first syllable is just the short E sound. The second syllable, “DI” has a short “U” sound and “BLE” sounds like the animal, “BULL”. Edible.
Next word.
Subterranean
“SUB” sounds like the sub from “SUBWAY”. “TER” has your typical “E R” sound supported by the letter T. “A” just has a long A sound. “NE” has a long E sound and “AN” has the same sound as the letter N. Subterranean.
And our last one would be,
Gourmet
Two syllables.
“GOUR” here, sounds like the word “OR” but is supported with the letter G in front. “MET” here isn’t actually pronounced “MET” but “MAY” like the month of May. This word originated from France so it has more of a French pronunciation. Gourmet.
Moving onto Vocabulary!
The first word is:
1. Edible
Definition
suitable or safe for eating
Used in a sentence you could say,
“That dish doesn’t look too edible.”
Next word,
2. Subterranean
Definition
under the ground
Used in a sentence you could say,
“I heard that there’s a subterranean stream that flows under our town.”
And lastly,
3. Gourmet
Definition:
(of food) very high quality
Used in a sentence you could say,
“This restaurant only serves gourmet food.”
So, as promised! The most expensive restaurant in the world is Sublimotion in Ibiza, Spain! It can cost upwards of about $3000 per head. (We say per head instead of per person for restaurants) Why does it cost so much?! One meal could be how much you pay for rent living in a nice apartment! Well, it’s not just about good food at Sublimotion, it’s an entire experience. You are served a 20-course meal by 25 people. You’re also treated to a special light show and each dish could either contain elements of virtual reality or a DJ playing music to match the dish you’re eating. Again, it’s an entire experience and actually sounds like a lot of fun. Good luck on making a reservation though. The restaurant is only open from June - September.
Alright, guys, that about does it for today’s episode. Thanks again for listening and join me next time on the Pronunciation Challenge. My name is Hubert and you can find me on Instagram at hughtran_. Until the next episode, see ya!
