Jonathan's script! Do you sometimes feel like you are working more yet getting less? Do you feel that work demands all your time, leaving you with no time for the other parts of your life? Do you sometimes struggle to pay for basic things like food and rent? Then you should check out today’s video, by the Royal Society of Arts or RSA. They are an organization dedicated to finding solutions to social challenges. They point out several things to consider, so it’s definitely worth a watch. I have my own thoughts on the video, but I’ll save those for later. For now, let’s take a look at today’s featured sentence:
Sentence: We've learned from experience that the only way to achieve real, sustained change is to engage everyone in the work ecosystem. 我們從經驗中得知,實現真正、持續變化的唯一途徑是讓工作生態系統中所有人都參與。
Pronunciation Tips: Blended words: to achieve, to engage Experience: 4 syllables Ecosystem: long e, long o, short i, short e
To achieve means to succeed in finishing something or reaching an aim, especially after a lot of work or effort. Here’s an example sentence: “Mary was happy that she lost 10 kilograms over the summer, so she managed to achieve her goal.” 瑪莉在暑假期間瘦了 10 公斤,而且她完成的她的目標。
Achieve is a verb, and the noun form of that verb is achievement. An achievement is something very good and difficult that you have succeeded in doing. For example, “Actor Brie Larson was awarded an Oscar in 2016, which was a great achievement for her.” 演員布麗·拉森在 2016 年得到了奧斯卡,對她來說是個很大的成就。
2. sustained (adj.) KK[səˋstend] IPA/səsˈteɪnd/ 持續的,持久的 continuing for a long time
If something is sustained, it continues for a long time. For example, “Cheetahs can run over 100 kilometers per hour, but they can’t sustain that speed for more than 20 or 30 seconds.” 獵豹可以在一小時內跑 100 公里,但他們無法持續的用那個速度跑超過 20 或 30 秒。
3. engage in sth (phr.) 參加;參與 to take part in something
When he was a college student, Ryan was often engaged in martial arts. 當他是個大學生時,Ryan 常常參加武術的活動。
Outro And that’s the end of today’s pronunciation challenge. As for my thoughts on the video, I agree that being a worker has become more challenging over time, at least in some parts of the world. For example, in my home country of Canada, there was a time when a single person working 40 hours a week could raise enough money to buy a house and support a family. But it seems as if those days are long gone. It’s important to note, however, that at that same time in some other parts of the world, people were very poor, and have since managed to lift themselves out of poverty. Nevertheless, I feel that the RSA’s goals are worthwhile. They ask a lot of important questions, I believe and having the right conversation is the first step to a solution.
But that’s what I think, now I want to hear what you think! What challenges do people face in your country? Are people’s lives overburdened by work, or is there a work/life balance? How could we do things differently? Let me know in the comments below, and don’t forget to do your recording!
I’m Jonathan for VoiceTube. I’ll catch you next time!
