0:32 Hello everyone! My name is Jonathan, and I’m back with another episode of VoiceTube’s Pronunciation Challenge. In today’s video, we get a glimpse(一瞥n.) of future transportation(n.交通工具), and what’s being done(a.完成了的) to prepare(準備v.) for it right now. It’s really fascinating and I recommend you check it out. I have my own thoughts about this, but I’ll save those for later, so stay tuned until the end! Right now, let’s take a look at today’s featured sentence:
So some of our technologies will integrate(/ˈɪn.t̬ə.ɡreɪt/使合併v.) the vehicle(/ˈviː.ə.kəl/陸上交通工具) technologies, and will also have off-grid(不和主電網接通的a.) renewable(/rɪˈnuː.ə.bəl/可再生的a.) energy integrated with solar panels(/ˈpæn.əl/鑲板n.) and hydrogen(/ˈhaɪ.drə.dʒən/氫) fuel(n.燃料) cell(電池n.) electric(/iˈlek.trɪk/電的a.) generators(/ˈdʒen.ər.eɪ.t̬ɚ/發電機n.).
1.1 grid (n.) 電力網 = a system of wires(/waɪr/電線n.) through which electricity is connected to different power stations(發電廠) across a region(區域n.)
1.2 off-grid (adj./adv.)
Derives(/dɪˈraɪv/起源v.) from off-the-grid
■ derive from sth (phr.) = to come from something
The English word "olive" is derived from the Latin word "oliva".
If something is “off grid”, or “off the grid”, it doesn’t depend on public utilities(utility/juːˈtɪl.ə.t̬i/公用事業n.) such as electricity. In this case, the person in the video is referring to the ability to power(v.驅動) vehicles independently(adv.獨立地), without depending on(依賴) electricity provided by the city.
Solar panels and wind turbines(/ˈtɜːrbaɪn/渦輪機n.) are two methods of generating(generate產生v.) electricity off-grid.
2. renewable [rɪˋnjuəb!] energy : 可再生能源 = energy that is produced using the sun, wind, etc., or from crops(作物n.), rather than(而不是) using fuels such as oil(石油) or coal(煤n.)
Renewable energy refers to an energy source that can be replenished(/rɪˈplen.ɪʃ/補充v.). Solar power, for example, is considered a renewable energy because we can always get new energy from the sun. Fossil fuel(石化燃料), however, is not considered a renewable source of energy because the earth’s supply of fossil fuel is limited(有限的a.) and will one day run out(耗盡).
■ replenish /rɪˈplen.ɪʃ/ (v.) = to fill something up again
Food stocks were replenished by/with imports from abroad.
The Canadian side of Niagara([naɪˋægərə]) Falls(瀑布n.) generates(v.發電) nearly 2 million kilowats of electricity, making it a key source of renewable energy.
3. integrate /ˈɪntəˌgreɪt/ v. 使合併 =to combine(v.合併) two or more things in order to become more effective. To integrate means to take one thing and combine it with something else. For example, in today’s video they talk about how existing transportation technologies will be combined together to be more effective.
Our new light-rail(輕軌) system will integrate with our existing network of subways(地下鐵交通n.) and buses to provide a comprehensive(/ˌkɑːm.prəˈhen.sɪv/全面的a.) public transit(/ˈtræn.zɪt/運輸n.) service.
That’s it for today’s pronunciation challenge. While the technology displayed(v.顯示) in today’s video might seem like something from a futuristic(/ˌfjuː.tʃəˈrɪs.tɪk/超前新奇的a.) fantasy movie, I believe it is important to be as forward-thinking as realistically(/ˌriː.əˈlɪs.tɪ.kəl.i/現實地adv.) possible when developing infrastructure(/ˈɪn.frəˌstrʌk.tʃɚ/n. This is because often such projects take years if not decades(數十年) to properly(adv.適宜地) develop. This is especially necessary in large, growing cities. For example, I am from Toronto, Canada. That area is expected(v.預計) to grow from 7 million in 2019 all the way to over 9.5 million by 2046. The city already has problems with traffic congestion(/kənˈdʒestʃən/擁塞n.), and adding more than 2 ½ million people will only make the problem worse. This is a problem shared by many cities around the world. For this reason, I find innovative(/ˈɪnəveɪtɪv/創新的a.) solutions such as those presented(/prɪˈzent/呈現v.) in today’s video encouraging(/ɪnˈkɝː.ɪ.dʒɪŋ/鼓舞人心的a.). What is it like where you live? Do you live in a large city, or out in the countryside? How do you get around(各處旅行)? Do you need to travel to get to work? Let me know in the comments below! And of course, remember to do your recording. I’ll catch you next time!
