Hey hey, VoiceTubers! Another week has passed since my last Pronunciation Challenge. Isn’t time flying by so quickly? Especially, when we’re busy with school, work or taking care of things at home. Speaking of school, I think just about anyone can relate to today’s topic. Most of us have gone to school. Some a little longer than others, and some also enjoy it a bit more than others. That’s okay either way, but what if I told you that our schools, or the way, we’re being taught in school, is quite inefficient and perhaps even unpractical? This is what today’s video points out, so you should go take a look. But of course, we will also check out today’s featured sentence and some key vocab in 3, 2, 1…

Most of the learning that happens in schools today is not authentic, because it relies on memorization and rote learning.

現今學校裡的大多數學習都不夠切實,因為這些學習主要仰賴死記硬背。

Pronunciation tips:
in schools today (pause) is not…
relies on (‘re’ short ‘e’ sound)

authentic adj. [ɔˋθɛntɪk] 可信的,真實的,可靠的

Something authentic is something real, actual, the way people say it is – nothing fake about it.

Example: Are you sure the signature is authentic? It doesn’t look like his usual handwriting.

Here, someone may have forged the signature. Meaning, some faked the signature. Which is, of course, illegal and can lead to some serious troubles down the road.

forge v. [fɔrdʒ] 偽造

memorization n. [͵mɛməˋrɪzeʃən] 記住
The act of learning something so you do not forget it.

Even though you’ve probably learned this word before, I think it’s important to review the pronunciation of ‘memorization’. Does that ‘i’ make a short sound or a long sound? Is it spelled with an ‘s’ or a ‘z’? To put it brief, the difference here is just American English and British English. In American English it’s common to spell it with a ‘z’ and we pronounce the ‘i’ with a short sound. “Memorization’. Whereas in British English it will be spelled with an ‘s’ and the ‘i’ makes a long sound.

Example: When we focus too much on memorization, we discourage our natural side to learn and understand.

rote (learning) n. [rot] 死記硬背

Focused on learning something to repeat it, but not necessarily understanding it.

Example: He learned multiplication by rote.

You may remember seeing a multiplication table, from one to a hundred, and instead of really understanding what, let’s say, seven times three is, you just remember that it’s 23. What? No, no I hope you caught that mistake there. Of course, it’s 21. But I’ll be honest, math was never my strong point in school.

Every country has its own system, and some are well-known for their outstanding performance in the field of education. Finland, for example, always seems to rank on top of the list with one of the best education systems in the world, and they’re known for getting rid of standardized tests. If you have a little extra time, you should look into what makes these systems different. Do you think your country’s education system needs to change or is it good the way it is? Let me know in the comments below along with your recording. On another note, this is my final episode here at VoiceTube today! Despite the short amount of time I spent working with the Pronunciation Challenge, I learned so much and had a lot of fun. I wish you guys all the best with your language learning journey! You’ll do great with VoiceTube on your side. Cheers!

☺Most of the learning that happens in schools today is not authentic, because it relies on memorization and rote learning.
■forge [fɔrdʒ] (vt.) 偽造;假冒;打(鐵等);鍛造;鍛鍊;(尤指努力地)製造、生産
(vi.) 突然向前猛衝;鍛造;做鍛工、做鐵匠;偽造;犯偽造罪
(n.C)熔鐵爐;煉冶場;鐵工廠
■memorization [͵mɛməˋrɪzeʃən] '={英式拼法} memorisation (nU.) 記住;熟記
■rote[rot] (n.U) 死記硬背;機械的作法;生搬硬套

#2:41 ... to kind of {?} emphasize that twist, that change there.
0:33 Hey hey, VoiceTubers! Another week has passed since my last Pronunciation Challenge. Isn’t time flying by so quickly? Especially, when we’re busy with school, work or taking care of things at home. Well, speaking of school, I think just about anyone can relate to today’s topic. Most of us have gone to school. Some a little longer than others, and some also enjoy it a bit more than others. That’s okay either way(無論哪一種方式), but what if(如果...會怎麼樣?) I told you that our schools, or the way, we’re being taught in school, is quite inefficient([ɪnəˋfɪʃənt]a.無效率的) and perhaps even unpractical([ʌnˋpræktɪk!]a.不切實際的)? This is what today’s video points out, so you should go take a look. But of course, we will also check out today’s featured(a.精選的) sentence and some key vocab in 3, 2, 1…

Most of the learning that happens in schools today is not authentic(/ɔːˈθen.tɪk/a.真正的), because it relies on memorization(/ˌmem.ə.rɪˈzeɪ.ʃən/n.熟背) and rote([rot]n.死記硬背) learning.

Here(adv.這裡), just two brief(a.簡略的) pronunciation tips.
We’ll say: “in schools today is not… “ that part there, we’re gonna pause([pɔz]v.停頓) right after “today”. Even though there’s no comma([ˋkɑmə]n.逗號) here, we will still need to make a little pause(n.停頓) to help the reader think a little bit about the learning in the schools, and then they’ll be surprised at twist(n.意外轉折) saying it’s not authentic. To kind of {?} emphasize(v.強調) that twist, that change there.

1. authentic (adj.) [ɔˋθɛntɪk] 可信的,真實的,可靠的
Something authentic is something real, it’s actual, it’s true, the way people say it is – nothing fake(a.假的) about it.

Are you sure the signature(/ˈsɪɡ.nə.tʃɚ/n.簽名) is authentic? It doesn’t look like his usual handwriting(n.筆跡).

Here, in this example sentence, someone may have forged(forge[fɔrdʒ]v.偽造) the signature. Meaning, some faked(fake假裝v.) the signature. Which is, of course, illegal and can lead to some serious troubles down the road(將來).

+ down the road/line/track = in the future
將來
Cars that drive themselves are in development now, but a marketable(/ˈmɑːr.kɪ.t̬ə.bəl/a.有銷路的) product is long way down the line. 無人汽車正在開發中,但要拿出有銷路的産品還有很長的路要走。

2. memorization (n.) UK /ˌmem.ə.raɪˈzeɪ.ʃən/
US /ˌmem.ə.rɪˈzeɪ.ʃən/ 記住;熟背 = The act of learning something so you do not forget it. Even though you’ve probably learned this word before, I think it’s important to review the pronunciation of ‘memorization’. We think does that ‘i’ make a short sound or a long sound? Is it spelled with an ‘s’ or a ‘z’? To put it brief{briefly?}, the difference here is just American English and British English. In American English it’s common to spell it with a ‘z’ and we pronounce(/prəˈnaʊns/v.讀) the ‘i’ with a short sound. “Memorization’. Whereas(=but /werˈæz/conj.但是) in British English it will be spelled with an ‘s’ and the ‘i’ makes a long sound.

When we focus too much on memorization, we discourage(v.使洩氣) our natural side(天性) to learn and understand.
That’ll bring us to our last word, which is related to memorization.

3 rote (n.) [rot] 死記硬背 = rote learning
= Focused on learning something to repeat(v.重複) it, but not necessarily understanding it.

He learned multiplication([͵mʌltəpləˋkeʃən]n.乘法計算) by rote.
So you may remember seeing a multiplication table(乘法表), from one to a hundred, remember like long time ago at school, and instead of really understanding what, let’s say, seven times(time乘以v.) three is, you just remember that it’s 23. What? No, no I hope you caught that mistake there. Of course, it’s 21. But I’ll be honest, math was never my strong point in school.

Every country has its own system, and some are well-known(a.著名的) for their outstanding(a.優秀的) performance in the field(n.領域) of education. Finland, for example, always seems to rank(具有…的地位或等級v.) on top of the list with one of the best education systems in the world, and they’re known for getting rid of(去除) standardized([ˋstændɚd͵aɪzd]a.標準化的) tests. Cheers!
