[Intro]

Happy Lunar New Year! Tomorrow is New Year’s Eve. Are you looking forward to the New Year holidays? Speaking of New Year, we can’t miss the New Year’s Eve dinner! And this is the most exciting part for me. Why? Of course, it’s because of the food! Therefore, I want to introduce today’s video to you, where you’ll learn eight lucky New Year dishes. One of the dishes will be mentioned in the sentence today… and the reason why we include this dish as one of the 8 lucky dishes. Do you know the answer already? Let’s hear the sentence!

[Vocab]

1. symbolize
symbolize 為動詞,意思是「代表,象徵」,相似詞為 represent。

The word of the day is ‘symbolize’. If one thing symbolizes another, it is used or regarded as a symbol of it. The synonym of this word is ‘represent’.

People tend to wear red during the Lunar New Year because red symbolizes luck in Chinese culture.
人們往往會在過年時穿紅色的衣物,因為紅色在中華文化中象徵好運。

If you visit Taiwan during Lunar New Year. You will see not only people on the street wearing red, but also red spring couplets. Besides, I bet you must have heard of the ‘red envelope’. And that’s right, as what its name would suggest, it’s also red.

2. coming
coming 為形容詞,意思是「即將來臨的,就要發生的」,例如在今日句子中的 coming year 就是「明年,來年」的意思。

The second word for today is ‘coming’, which can be a noun or an adjective. And in today’s sentence, it’s as an adjective meaning ‘happening soon’. For instance,

My sister is going to get married this coming Saturday.
我姐姐將在這週六結婚。

補充一個 coming 的相關字彙 up-and-coming,up-and-coming 為形容詞,意思是「有前途的」。

Before we get into the final word, let’s learn another related word ‘up-and-coming’. Up-and-coming is an adjective referring to ‘likely to be successful and popular in the future’. For example,

She is one of the up-and-coming musicians of this year. Many people believe that she may make her way to worldwide recognition one day.
她是今年的新銳音樂家之一,許多人相信她有一天會家喻戶曉。

3. surplus /ˈsɜːpləs/
surplus 可以作名詞或是形容詞,作名詞時,意思是「剩餘物」,作形容詞時,意思是「剩餘的,多餘的」。

Surplus can be a noun or an adjective. When it’s as a noun, it means ‘an amount of something that is more than what is needed or used’. Let’s look at the example below.

Farmers asked the government to take measures that can deal with the surplus bananas.
農民要求政府採取可以解決香蕉過剩的措施。

[Outro]

Alright, that’s all for today’s pronunciation challenge. I hope you’ve learned some New Year dishes in English and the meanings behind them. Next time when you’re with your foreign friends, you can introduce these foods to them! Also, tell me your favorite New Year food by leaving comments below. Again, Happy New Year guys and see you next week!
