[Intro]

Hello, VoiceTubers! This is Annie. Welcome to today’s pronunciation challenge! Sorry, I just can’t stop myself from yawning and I’m in the recording room where it is a little bit stuffy. Do you guys tend to feel drowsy, especially in confined spaces such as a classroom or in an office? If you have similar experiences, then you must wanna know what causes you to feel sleepy and what slows your brain down. In today’s video, you’ll get answers to these questions. Alright, let’s get into today’s sentence right away!

[Vocab]

1. unventilated /ʌnˈvɛntəˌleɪtɪd/
unventilated 為形容詞,意思是「不通風的」,這個字是由動詞 ventilate 衍伸而來,ventilate 的意思是「使通風」,常會使用被動的形式,例如:「通風良好」可以說 well ventilated,「通風不良」則是 poorly ventilated。而 ventilate 這個字則是由 vent 衍伸而來的,vent 作名詞意思是「通風口」。那我們來看看 unventilated 的例句吧!

The terrorists seized 10 hostages and locked them in a dark and unventilated room.
恐怖份子劫持了 10 名人質,並把他們關在一個黑暗且不通風的房間裡。

The first word today is unventilated. Unventilated is an adjective which means a room or a space isn’t provided with fresh air. This word is from the verb ‘ventilate’. Ventilate refers to ‘to allow fresh air to enter and move around a room, building, etc.’ We often say “well ventilated ” meaning ‘be provided with a plentiful supply of fresh air’.

2. concentration
concentration 為名詞,在影片中的意思是「濃度」,當意思為「濃度」時,我們常會說 a concentration of sth. 來表示「某種東西的濃度」,例如句子中說的 the concentration of carbon dioxide 就是指「二氧化碳的濃度」,而「高濃度」我們會說 high concentration,「低濃度」則是 low concentration。

The concentration of greenhouse gases have increased in recent years.
溫室氣體的濃度在最近幾年有所增加。

Concentration is a noun referring to ‘the amount of a substance in a liquid or in another substance’. The common usage of this word is ‘a concentration of sth.’, you can see the example in today’s sentence which says ‘the concentration of carbon dioxide’. Let’s see another example below.

3. atmosphere /ˈætməˌsfɪr/
atmosphere 為名詞,意思是「空氣」,例如:stuffy atmosphere (不通風的空氣)、smoky atmosphere (煙霧瀰漫的空氣)。

Atmosphere is a noun which means ‘the air that you breathe in a place’.

I need to go outside and get some fresh air. The atmosphere of the classroom is so stuffy!
我需要去外面呼吸新鮮空氣,教室的空氣太不通風了。

atmosphere 還有「氣氛,氛圍」的意思,前面加上形容詞,就會變成「...的氛圍」,舉例來說,cosy asmosphere 意思是「舒適的氛圍」,welcoming atmosphere 意思是「熱情友善的氛圍」,再接著看一個例句吧:

The other meaning of the word ‘atmosphere’ is ‘the feeling that an event or place gives you’. We usually add an adjective before the word. For instance, ‘a welcoming atmosphere’ means you’re in a place where you feel accepted. We can see another example in the following sentence.

Tom went to a restaurant, which had a romantic atmosphere, with his girlfriend.
Tom 跟他女友去一家有浪漫氛圍的餐廳用餐。

[Outro]

Alright, that’s all for today’s pronunciation challenge! If you feel sleepy right now in the office or classroom, don’t worry, it’s not your fault! Open the window or just go outside to get some fresh air. In fact, I’m going to do that. Can’t wait to breathe the fresh air outside the recording room... Don’t forget to practice today’s sentence and see you next week!
