We have to do a lot of preparation before a typhoon strikes and most importantly, we have to go shopping at a grocery store or a supermarket to stock up on food(儲存食物).

What are your go-to foods when a typhoon is raging outside of the window?

* Raging: continuing with great force or intensity.

I die for a steaming(熱氣騰騰的) cup of instant noodles when curling up (蜷缩)on my couch at a stormy (暴風雨的)night and watching some movies.

But other than getting prepared for a typhoon, we go to grocery stores to shop for everyday necessities all the time and today’s video tells us about all the way we might have been doing our shopping wrong(所有我們都可能消費的方式都是錯的).

Bemoan is a verb and it means to regard with displeasure, disapproval or regret or to complain or to express sadness about something.

Students are bemoaning the seemingly endless stream of homework and tests(看似源源不絕無止盡的功課和考試).

Produce is a noun and it means an agricultural product, especially the fresh foods or vegetables as distinguishes from (而非)grains and other staple crops(其他主食類作物).

*as opposed to: 而非

The income of the farm depends entirely on its produce.

Produce(產生) as a verb means to make something or to bring something into existence.

This area produces some of the best teas in Asia

to keep sth. in check (phr.): to limit something.

We have to keep our expenses in check since we are expecting a baby(想要有小孩).

If fruits or vegetables are in season(當季的), they are being produced in the area and are available and ready to eat.

Our restaurant only uses the freshest ingredients in season that come straight from the local farms.

If fruits and vegetables are out of season, they do not grow in an area that during that time.

We barely have watermelons in winter because they are out of season.

out of season (phr.)
* We barely have watermelons in winter because they are out of season.

As a broke student, I do that all the time since fruits and vegetables are really expensive, especially in Taipei.

All right, that’s it for today’s episode.
Why don’t we wrap up with some questions? How do you save money when you’re shopping in the grocery stores? Do you have any shopping tips to share? Leave a comment to let me know. And please do record your own challenge after listening to me for 8 minutes. That’s how you improve your English speaking skills.
Make those 8 minutes count.

Thank you, Estelle.

People often bemoan the high cost of produce, but there's an easy way to keep your budget in check when purchasing fruits and vegetables: buy what's in season.
