As more and more streaming players get into the game, the question becomes, how much we're willing to stretch our wallets and attention spans to include new services.
英英版筆記在本版留言區及英文版錄音留言區,Helena多講了一些她在香港的生活,還有多講了一個vocabulary “span”. Welcome on board, Helena! +謝謝unickname協助訂正不確定的部份^ ^ 中英版筆記:Hello everyone, welcome to today's pronunciation challenge, my name is Helena and I will be your new host on Sundays. To briefly introduce myself, I was born in California and was raised in Taiwan. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a native speaker. My English skills were so bad years ago, so my mom used to tease(取笑) me that I was always better in English when I was two. But at some points of my life, I started to realize that being able to speak English is really important. So I decided to take it more seriously and tried to learn in any possible ways. I also used to use VoiceTube and pronunciation challenge before, so it’s really amazing but also weird for me, being a host here. So how have my English gotten improved? I think my English listening and speaking improved the most in past two years. I studied in Hong Kong for two years. I studied IB, which offers an internationally [accredited(鑑定合格的)] diploma(文憑). In the period of two years, I had to speak English every day to survive there, and that’s how the environment really push me to improve faster. 國際文憑 IB: International Baccalaureate[͵bækəˋlɔrɪɪt] So really give yourselves more chances to listen and speak English. The progress(進步) will happen eventually. Moving on to today’s video: How binge-watching(追劇) is changing everything. You’re right, the first topic I want to discuss with you is binge-watching. Binge-watching is pretty much a twenty-first century term(專有名詞) which is used to describe a new phenomenon(現象) that people watch five to ten or even twenty episodes of TV series a day. (When online streaming platforms like Netflix or YouTube channels become more and more common ), people don’t need to wait for weeks and weeks to watch TV shows. Instead, they can finish the all series within a day and without any disturbances(干擾) from the ADs. Anyways, let’s get today’s sentence. “As more and more streaming players get into the game, the question becomes, how much we're willing to stretch our wallets and attention spans to include new services.”
1. streaming [/ˈstriː.mɪŋ/] (n.) (音頻或視頻的)分流,線上收聽(或收看) online streaming live streaming 線上直播 * We can watch sports competition on live streaming platforms and cheer(歡呼) for the players. * The TV industry is dying, not only are online streaming services like Netflix and YouTube getting their audiences(觀眾) away from TV watchers, but social media and online news media platforms are also talking audiences away from traditional news broadcast(廣播).
2. stretch [/stretʃ/ ] (v.) 伸出;伸長;拉伸 例句中stretch our wallet=花錢 * I stretched out my hand to take the pen on the other side of the table.
stretching(n.) 身體拉伸、暖身 * We have to do some stretching before we play any sports or else(否則) we may get hurt. * It’s important to stretch your legs and arms before you start exercising.
a bit of stretch (ph.) 誇張, (+牽強) * You are going to bankrupt(破產), don’t you think it’s a bit of stretch to say that?
3. attention [ /əˈten.ʃən/] (n.) 注意,留心;考慮;關心 * The teacher would often ask students pay attentions in the class.
* He tries hard to be the center of attention(目光焦點). to be center of attention = to be under the spotlight(聚光燈)= being in the spotlight
get someone’s attention 吸引某人(心儀對象)的注意 * How can I get her attention? She’s cute = she is attractive, she’s hot, she’s my type.
Lastly, I want to share a bit of my experiences with binge-watching. Binge-watching is one of my guilty pleasure(有愧疚感的,樂事). But the thing is I don’t usually plan to binge-watching stuff, when I start to watch something, I can’t stop myself from clicking the next episode,it’s just so [tempting(吸引人的)].
