Hello everyone, my name is Sam and welcome to today’s pronunciation challenge. Our challenge today comes from the video called Clueless Dude Cares for Toddlers for a Day and this is a video from Buzz Feed. And I must say that is a very Buzz Feed title. I don’t know if you guys know Buzz Feed. The originality just did some articles and quizzes and certain of, I don’t know weird entertainment things on the website. Another dude tons of videos and actually, some of them are pretty good and I think this one is actually quite funny. So if you haven’t seen it on earth, you check it up. But anyway, let’s get onto our pronunciation challenge. Be a very short one today.

今天我要來學習如何當爸爸。我跟我太太就快要有小孩了，不過我一想到就感到非常害怕、招架不住。
That’s a little bit short today and I’m very sure that it’s a little bit sentiment that many men share maybe it’s not as much in Taiwan maybe, maybe so. Let me know your comments. If you are a dad, how do you feel, are you terrified and overwhelmed? And yes, let’s get onto our vocabulary.

So, our first four words I’m sure that none of these are new words to anyone. But, I want to talk a little bit about how they are used because often you kind of know these words mean, but sometimes they have certain connotations which just means that they give us certain feeling people react them in a certain way like sort of beyond just the definition, beyond the meaning, the sort of the feeling that they give.

1 . dad 爸爸
I want to mention this is because it’s kind of three kind of levels. So you got dad, daddy and father and you got mom, mommy and mother. I think the general way you could explain how to use these three is when you quite young, 11 or 10 or younger, you say mommy and daddy that’s how you refer to your parents. And I’m sure all of you would say, Sam why are you teaching us these because none of us are under 11 (years old)? I don’t think at least; let me know down the comments if you were under 11 years old. But these would also be useful if you are talking to kids. So, often you will say where is your mommy or that kind of thing? That’s for young kids and you have dad and mom which, I would say, are a kind of the safest options. They’re kind of the most practicable in most scenarios any, you know, casual setting; any age. It’s not weird when you are old and you say Dad and Mom, nothing weird about that at all. And then, father and mother, I think, are probably the most formal of the three. I think these are probably best for formal situations for giving a speech and maybe you are speaking at a more serious event; I would say father and mother. In general, they do come off at a little bit formal. I think it’s quite familiar to in Chinese. But, I wouldn’t say my father is coming to visit. It sounds kind of a little bit strange, a little bit too formal for like a casual setting if you are just chatting with your friends. So, the reason I mention here is something that you may or may not find in a dictionary because they are both defined us your mother, your father, your dad and your mom that’s kind of have the same meaning but they can have different kind of feeling for those different words.

mom [mɑm] (n.) 媽媽
mommy

mother [ˋmʌðɚ] (n.) 母親

2 . completely 完全地、徹底地

completely [kəmˋplitlɪ] (adv.) 完全地、徹底地
the complete part of you felt a certain way
whole; but this is often used just to emphasize something
exaggerate a certain point
I’m completely terrified and overwhelmed.
I’m really, really terrified.
I’m super terrified.
I’m very, very terrified.

totally [ˋtot!ɪ] (adv.) 整個地、全部地
I was totally terrified.
I was totally exhausted.
very, really, completely and totally

3 . terrified 懼怕的

terrified [ˋtɛrə͵faɪd] (adj.) 懼怕的
scared
I am terrified of spiders.
I am terrified of roller coasters.

petrified [ˋpɛtrɪfaɪd] (adj.) 驚呆的
turn something into rock or stone
You are so shocked or scared that you just freeze; that you cannot move.
I was terrified. / I was petrified.
I am terrified of public speaking.
I am petrified of roller coasters.

4 . overwhelmed 壓倒的

overwhelmed [͵ovɚˋhwɛlmd] (adj.) 壓倒的
He had a lot of emotions.
I am completely terrified and overwhelmed by that idea.
There is just so much going on in his head when he thinks of that. The idea of having kids to him is just implied by that I mean, big life changes, you know, good and bad and just everything right. So, it’s just so much that. It’s just overwhelming. It just means there’s way too much to think about.

I was overwhelmed by the idea.
I was overwhelmed by the positive response.
I was overwhelmed with joy or happiness.

By the way, I should mention if anyone is wondering that gonna, of course, just means going to. But, pretty often when people are speaking quickly, they combine them together. You know, going to is the same gonna and quite often people will type that as well. So, here is a subtitle we also wrote as gonna because that’s actually how he pronounce it.

@lovely爸 其實我也覺的，那個小舌音並不好聽... 據說最早傳出來法語是最美的語言，是來自於法國作家都德的最後一課，但是人家那裡是有特定環境下說的，後來就被斷章取義各種傳，法語慢慢就變成最優美的語言了...多少小朋友被這句話騙上了賊船...唉

@楊威力 是啊，因為法語說起來感覺聲音很細碎，聽起來仿佛溫柔一點點吧...但一定是沒學過的前提下

@Tony Chiu，那個奇怪的聲音我到現在都學不來，主要不能認同。大概就是就是嘴發出爆破的聲音，像是漏了起的氣球又有人強行捏，讓它很快撒氣的聲音...

@Reiko Chiou 我覺得剛開始學法語，的確最好先暫時扔掉英文，以後再撿回來。因為同時學英文和法語，對你初步構建法語的語音語法體系非常不利，你英語學的越好的人，進入法語世界的時間可能越長。因為除了母語體系外，你已經建立了一套外語體系了，而且是在成年以後，過了最基礎的階段，再撿回來英文，就能好很多了。
