One of the great things about Nara park is that this is their natural habitat so of course they're wild deer but it feels like we're in the middle of a forest almost with like this creek as well as just like these trees and this area looks beautiful in the fall and in the sakura season like you have the rich red and brown autumn leaf colors and of course in the spring which it is now the cherry blossoms are a bit late the really pink trees so Nara park looks great all year round oh and in the summer it goes bright green so yeah oh it's really really nice and it's great to just come out here because I feel like a lot of people might miss it when they do the golden route but you have to the deer are just so cute this guy's hungry bow oh good boy one tip is when you come here do a bow and then give them the cracker oh this is a really fun experience when you come here oh okay yeah you hungry too so today the deer have been very friendly but in the past they used to be very hungry and would come after you if you carried any other food so my final tip is try not to carry food outside of these crackers because they might want to eat it and that's not good for them either so yeah oh they're so beautiful what a beautiful creature all right I've had a lot of fun with the deer but now it's time to check out the temple nearby it only costs 800 yen for entry and I think it's one of the best experiences you can have here because seeing something like this it's out of this world and you're gonna have to wait till we get inside to just understand how big this is it's actually been around since the year 752 and it is now a world heritage site I love that Japan is able to preserve these beautiful historic areas and you can come here because literally thousands of people are visiting this temple to pray to the buddha every single day the great buddha itself is actually situated inside the daibutsuden which is the great buddha hall and it's among one of the world's largest wooden buildings and it took approximately 2.6 million people to build the great buddha that now lies in here and when you come inside you'll go around literally a big loop and there are tons of other statues you can check out and you can just really take it in because I can't describe to you in person right now how big it is I really lost for words great buddha in Japanese is called daibutsu where dai means giant and butsu means buddha and so if you ever come to Japan and you're looking to see the daibutsu that's what it means great buddha right now I'm actually in a queue because I'm going to be going through one of the great buddha's nostrils yes I know that sounds a little peculiar but it's an experience you can try here so I'll see you in a moment I don't think I fit I'm not going to get the good luck from the buddha but if you're small enough you can come the street food scene in Nara is incredible and I highly recommend coming to Kintetsu Nara because when you walk about three minutes from the station you'll be in this shopping like arcade and you can already smell all these amazing foods and there's actually a mitarashi dango store right here behind me and I'm seeing them make it fresh and I'd love to try it and introduce it to you guys so for 130 yen you can grab yourself a mitarashi dango and that is this type of mochi that is covered and coated in this really sweet salty sauce and I absolutely love it and you can just smell the roasted mochi right in front of me the moment I got it there was just steam coming off of it and it's time to dig in itadakimasu oh my god there's a little surprise I just noticed deer butts very cute a female and a male deer so yeah everything in Nara is very much deer themed and I'm all for it this was one of the best dango that you can get honestly if you come to Nara you have to try this and it's so budget friendly it has such a nice crispy outside texture and then when you bite into it it just kind of like melts in your mouth and you're just chewing on it and honestly the glazed mitarashi sauce is so delicious and if you scoop some from inside here you can get even more okay so I've just got the mochi that they made freshly behind me and I'm going to bite into it it's really warm oh it's so stretchy delicious and it's coated in kinako powder but I gotta get out of here because there's a big line but inside we have red bean as well and over there there are so many people coming here to enjoy this amazing incredible performance because they are pounding mochi which is a traditional activity here in Japan especially at New Year's the speed they were going so so fast wow this is one of the biggest things in Nara to see and it's gone viral on social media so if you're in this shopping district definitely make it a stop and if you're curious about how much this costs it's only 180 yen and the performance is free to enjoy so yeah can't recommend this enough another street food to try here is ichigo daifuku which is a popular Japanese snack and it's basically a beautiful strawberry and we have mochi where inside there's a red bean paste have a little Nara themed deer cracker this gets so adorable and a store actually specializes in strawberry so they're getting it every morning from the strawberry fields here in Nara and I'm okay I'm going to give it a go that strawberry is so sweet Japanese strawberries are also so delicious you can't compare them to the ones we get overseas I love the combination of the fruity tangy strawberry and then you have the really rich really sweet like red bean paste inside and then the mochi which doesn't really have flavor itself balances that all out and I'm going to give this little deer biscuit cookie a try oh my god it's so cute it's just like a shortbread cookie sorry deer this is really really good and I think for one of these it's only 300 yen so everything here the street food is super affordable a classic food to try when you're in Nara is kaki no ha zushi and essentially it's this typical food that they'll have at summer festival time here in Japan and they'll use this persimmon leaf and they'll wrap the sushi which has fish as well as the sushi rice and because I can't eat seafood I've dragged sure to try them thank you yeah we have salmon horse mackerel and sea bream and it's really cool because they're wrapped in the persimmon leaf which is really unique because normal sushi doesn't come like this yeah wait how'd you eat this so I know that you can't eat the leaf so you have to open it up okay so be careful when you eat this oh it looks really so this one looks like the salmon one I always enjoy some salmon this is raw fish I mean if you come to Japan you do have to try some sushi okay I'm gonna try this one let's go with this salmon one now do I just put the whole thing in whatever you want man that rice is very chewy very gelatinous the fish is really good I love sushi anyway this rice has more of like a sweet vinegary like it's compared to like normal sushi that you'll find at the kaiten place it's definitely more like a sweet or like vinegary is that the main difference you'd say yeah I think that's the main difference like the fish is like good quality tastes great but the rice is very it tastes different for sure compared to like normal like sushi store sushi maybe you should unwrap another one I like the whole experience of eating this because it's very different it's like a parcel you just have to unwrap it and then you know it's fresh because like even though I don't eat seafood I can see just how like which one's this one let's have it what what's this one sea bream aji I have no idea but I'm gonna put it in my mouth so I think I made a mistake that's a lot of that's a lot of rice in my mouth don't make the mistake I did and put the whole thing in take it in two bites it's very chewy there's a lot of rice like the rice is very rich I'm here to try something called chagayu and it's known in Nara as okaisan and it's basically Japanese traditional rice porridge and it's created by having boiled white rice and then they add hojicha which is roasted green tea and it's in this like bowl where it's just like a soup honestly and I've never had it before so I'm gonna give it a go it's definitely something you can easily digest and I've heard that the people here in Nara eat this for breakfast and this is how they start their day here and originally began back at Todaiji which is where we visited earlier and it was used as a ceremonial dish so I can see like there's a lot of history but I like it because it's just really easy to eat and the bitterness of the tea actually kind of balances it out quite nicely and there's a lot of places you can eat this when you're visiting Nara but I've come to a specialty pickle store so in Japan pickles are really big and I've got a large variety here I've got kimchi I have some local Japanese veggies as well as things like radish and I'm going to give it a go so itadakimasu and this is all you can eat pickles so this particular place has a miso soup but it's inside this little wafer monaka and so what you got to do is grab this hot water and we're going to pour it inside and apparently it'll just dissolve and not only do I have a wafer as a miso soup as a dessert I also have a little monaka with red bean paste inside too Nara is quite similar to Kyoto in many ways it has a lot of rich cultural tradition and so I find that a lot of the wagashi that we've had earlier today like traditional Japanese sweets and red bean is super common here there was some seaweed as well wakame in there it also came with a hojicha tea to go with the dish as well as a soft boiled egg this dish is also great because you can enjoy it any time of year in the summer they will serve it to chilled and in the warmer seasons of course it's going to be hot but you can add sides so sweet potato persimmons because there are so many persimmons here in Nara make sure to give this a go when you're visiting Nara if you're going to visit Japan there's one thing you should consider trying out and that's staying at a temple this is called shukubo and it is where you get to stay overnight inside a temple and this is a temple in the mountains of Nara this is a very unique experience and we're going to be learning lots of things from the monks who work here and live here including eating the dinner and morning rituals and it's going to be such an amazing experience and I'm going to take you along for this so let's go check out our room so this is gyokuzoin temple and when you arrive there's actually a lot of pathways but when you come here you can actually check in at reception which is this beautiful building behind me and you're greeted by the monks so let's head inside and say hello konnichiwa welcome to my room come inside this is actually really nice for a hotel that's inside of a temple I don't know if I can call it a hotel it's a temple stay and the greatest thing is this kotatsu so this is a heated table where you can sit inside it and of course we have a little bit of a view out the window which you can admire from here wow so these are all sakura trees and when they're all in full bloom it would be absolutely beautiful and if you come over here this is where we have my bed and it's not a typical you know western style bed it's a japanese one so this is a futon and it has a really nice beautiful like silk style blanket and then we have a pillow but this is not any pillow it's got beans inside and this is where I'm going to be sleeping for the night pretty cozy it's very big I think you could fit several people in here so if you're planning to stay with friends or family you can definitely fit about three to four people I'd say also I think it's time for dinner and while I'm staying here it's important to be punctual so I don't want to be late it's dinner time and to have our meals we're actually brought into this big communal space but we're dining on these like tiny cushions and tiny tables it's really cute and we have a variety of food here and I believe that it's all vegetarian and some of it is vegan friendly and this is the main part it's a nabe so a hot pot and we have things like negis green onion mushroom tofu as well as some sides here this is what would typically be sashimi but we have some type of tofu and I believe this looks like konnyaku and then we have more on the side here and I'm very interested in this tempura because there's one that is really colorful it has all types of like crackers on it and then we have a dessert other dishes lots of side things of course rice so it's going to be a very filling meal I start with this nabe and I'm very excited because there's something inside here which is called yuba dango and yuba is actually tofu skin it's a big part of the traditional food here and I've never had that before it's very hot wow that is delicious but all the soup was just inside and absorbed also ordered some drinks thank you so I have some local sake from Nara very excited it's a cold one and it'll go perfectly with this dish and we put it inside something called an ochoko it's a cute little cup like this and of course they have other alcoholic drinks on the menu you can get asahi beer as well as shochu which is sweet potato alcohol and while you're staying here they do have vending machines which you can access at any time but they don't sell alcohol so if you want to drink do it while you're having your dinner this is honestly the perfect way to enjoy a traditional Japanese meal that sake is so smooth it's a little bit on the like karakuchi side so the dry side there's another interesting thing here we have yuba so usually it's sashimi so raw fish but here they've taken the yuba skin as I mentioned earlier that was tofu skin and you dip it into soy sauce so this is instead of seafood which is great for anyone with dietary requirements so when you have tempura we've also got some special tempura salt which you'll enjoy with it such a good such a good dish so in terms of activities while you're staying overnight after dinner you essentially have free time but there is something called a night walk so you can wander around the entire premise and there are lanterns that are basically lit up so I'm going to do that but there's also a bath and the bath hours are very specific you can only enter between 5 p.m to 10 p.m so you can't miss that because in the morning they're not available either I actually had a peek at them earlier they're very nice and modern as well as the toilets here so you don't have to worry are they old are they easy to use totally fine but other than that I do have a very early morning start tomorrow incredibly early so I need to fill up my belly drink a lot of alcohol get a bit sleepy walk a bit and then sleep in my lovely futon cheers I want to take you along for a bit of a night temple tour and everything is surprisingly well lit we have these beautiful stone lanterns that have lights inside them and they all light up when it becomes dark but the red is very vibrant and stands out and they have some big light shining and another great thing is in the distance the city of Nara is literally sparkling it's it's great it's beautiful I can see the stars seeing stars in Japan isn't something you're going to see too often because there's a lot of light pollution but out here in the countryside on this mountain you can see everything this is what Japan should be like nature and thousands of years of history wow this is a really really special experience I highly highly recommend for anyone who's interested in Japanese culture and history to come here and spend the evening there are so many stone lanterns here and it feels like I've walked almost into a movie set it's hard to describe how you feel here it feels incredible and this is the very authentic Japanese experience that you can only really have by coming out to such a remote location also if you're worried about being alone don't worry there's actually a lot of other people staying at the temple so you can probably make friends and try and find someone to come along with you but honestly there's nothing to be afraid of because it's really well lit and it's a really easy path and it's the same way that you come in when you arrive at the temple this place is incredible I have never experienced something like this and if you're a big videographer or photographer you are going to love it there are so many unique shots you can get here and it's just it's just insane it's so beautiful don't forget your cameras if you're coming here you're gonna regret it trust me I'm back in my room and I'm relaxing in the kotatsu I showed earlier and there's one more thing I need to do tonight except for going in the bath and that's write my wish on this wooden block that I purchased earlier when I was checking in to the temple so essentially tomorrow morning I'm going to be waking up at around 4 30 a.m to participate in a special ritual and in order to be ready for it I need to write on here so I'm going to see you guys very bright and early tomorrow after I finish writing this wish the sun has now risen and we finished our morning rituals at yokuyudo and this was called the goma prayer and so essentially the head monk of this temple will come here every morning and perform this ritual where he'll use fire to burn all of the wooden sticks and it's to make all of your wishes as well as remove any despair and pain and misfortune in the world anything that's written on the wooden blocks essentially and it was honestly one of the most incredible experiences that you can have in Japan I've never witnessed anything like it before although I was still half asleep I just was mesmerized by the sounds going on there's someone hitting on a drum as you can still hear in the distance right now as well as bells and then of course the flames just increasing as well as sparks flying and then halfway through there was just smoke covering the room I think we were in there for about 30 minutes to 40 minutes um yeah it was it was absolutely beautiful hopefully my wish comes true I'm counting on it there's a high chance now that I've done this and I think I might just wander around a bit before an early morning breakfast right back where we were last night so I'll see you guys around after breakfast there's only a couple activities left for my stay I'll do some meditation as some sutra which is like writing potentially calligraphy I'll find out though but I need to get my energy to get through this day I definitely didn't get enough sleep so I need to get the nutrition before beginning we chant a mantra yeah you know okay so please repeat after me three times Om Be Shira Manda Ya Sohaka yeah thank you thank you it's difficult I'm not the best at calligraphy it's something I've done many times but it is a little challenging so I've got some ink here and I have a calligraphy pen and I think the technique is you have to hold it kind of up um you've got to lean in and we're going opposite here so we're going right to left um yeah top to bottom I think if you didn't know any Japanese this would be even more difficult you have to be careful when you grab the ink that you don't dunk it in too much because then it becomes really difficult to neatly do it I've got too much ink and it's just blotching it the one I struggle with the most is the hiragana for RU every time there's a RU I'm like this is Mount Wakakusa a mountain situated directly behind Nara park and between Todaiji temple and Kasuga shrine and it offers really beautiful panoramic views of the entire city and right now it's a sunny afternoon there are tons of families couples just coming here to have a relaxing day out but I recommend coming here at sunset or in the evening to get a different perspective because it would just be so amazing and one surprising thing is that there are actually tons of roaming free roaming deer so literally in all of Nara or Nara city there are deer just hanging about yeah so I'm going to walk around and say farewell to Nara because this is my last few moments here head to the links down below Sometimes I just play up the fact that I'm a tourist here One of the foods that you should try If you want to challenge yourself I think it's considered The fourth stinkiest food in the world I don't know why I think it tastes pretty good It's called Kusaya Kusaya means smell It's actually really good It has a ton of flavor It's good to have some booze Or some sake with it I have an episode on that coming real soon The Shima region, as you can already see Really colorful This is Okasawara You all know I did a video there Chichijima Father's island, mother's island You can see they've got these ciders here One thing I remember When I learned from Chichijima The Bonin Islands Is that they have Really unusual lemons And they make drinks from that lemon It's really good They also have passion fruit As well So let's get a stamp here For Okasawara It's hard to Find it Because stamps are in Japanese Japanese and This is all in English Okasawara must be here I've got two stamps Gotta keep working The best thing about this Yurikara Kusaya He's a He's that stinky fish That's the best thing about it He's just so unsymmetrical That's the best This is Aogashima This is one of my favorite islands It's got that volcano in the middle It looks like Jurassic Park You might have seen this Remember the video I made on the old channel I gotta go back there Because I've got so many friends there But they also have Kuroge Wagyu They also have Shochu They make on the island So they do have some industry Despite the fact that the population is only 160 Here's the Shochu This stuff is fire You probably remember that From my old visit They have I had something called Torinabe In there So you can get a bento here And you can try some of the fish You can see That's from an airplane That shot You gotta get there by helicopter From Hachijojima But the Shochu If you do go You gotta get a bottle of the Shochu It's very famous there They produce it at this time of year So the distillery is Right now being At its limit But you can try the Shochu Find one that you like And buy a couple of bottles I think you can get them in Tokyo Or come to the event You can get one here It's nice they're making the bentos in the truck there And here's the Tokyo Island booth So you can get more information Nijima, Hachijo, Aogashima There's English as well Thank you You get the entire guide in English Another stamp rally So this one would be The Tokyo Island Where is it?
