- We use it. We put it to work with amazing success whether it's building a large hadron collider or building a semiconductor device for consumer electronics. Quantum mechanics is there tested very very reliable. But remember it has this idea that when you measure something it changes the state of the quantum system you measured and you haven't told me what it means to measure something. The measurement problem. So of course the most obvious example of measuring something is when I as a conscious human being actually make a measurement of something. So it was perfectly legitimate and absolutely tempting let's say in the middle of the 20th century to wonder out loud does this mean that consciousness plays an important role in the fundamental laws of physics. Now all I can tell you is I don't think so. I think very much the other way. I think the consciousness arises out of the ordinary interplay of all the complicated things going on according to the laws of physics. But there is a school of thought that says actually consciousness is responsible for the collapse of the wave function in quantum mechanics or maybe I shouldn't even think about wave functions as real things. I should think about agents making measurements as the real things and I use quantum mechanics as a tool to predict what their measurement outcomes will be.
