- Many buildings in Dresden were still in ruins due to the bombing, as they still had to walk through rubble and stones to get from one building to the next. After having lived with his aunt Gretel for a while, he moved into an apartment with some friends in the same street as the apartment of Marianna Oefinger, known as Emma, whom he married in 1957. At the academy, he was trained academically, marked by socialist realism. He joined the department for mural painting, which was a bit less strict.
