"The best way to appreciate your job is to imagine yourself without one." — Oscar Wilde

What’s up my fellow listeners of VoiceTube! For all the new listeners, my name is Hugh and I usually host the Pronunciation Challenge on Saturdays. Sticking with the current trend, we are introducing a series of courses aimed at teaching you, the listener, on how to use English in everyday situations! For today’s episode, we’ll be learning some words/phrases we can use in the workplace! Our lovely actors demonstrate (to show you to explain something) a conversation between colleagues during a meeting. What are some of the things we can say? Watch the video, record your attempt at the featured sentence and get back to me for even more phrases we can use in the workplace!

Today’s featured sentence:
We need to decide on a color scheme of the new book and set a date to pitch it to the executives.

I’ll say that again.

We need to decide on a color scheme of the new book and set a date to pitch it to the executives.

Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.

For the first word, we have
Decide
Two syllables
“De” has a short U sound, “duh”. “Cide” sounds like the word, “side”, like, “Which side of the street are you located?”. Decide.

Next up, we have
Scheme
One syllable
The spelling of this word can easily throw off any non-native English speaker. Imagine this word being spelt, “s k e e m” instead, which means it has a long E sound. Scheme.

Lastly, we have
Executives
Four syllables
With the first syllable, imagine it being spelt, “ig” so it would have a short i sound. “Xe” has a short E sound with a Z sound in front. With “cu”, it has more of a short E sound with a K sound in front. “Tives” sounds like it’s actually spelt, “T I V S”. Executives.

Moving onto Vocabulary!

The first word is:
1. Scheme
Definition
an officially organized plan or system
Used in a sentence you could say,
“We had to take a look at the entire scheme before deciding on the next step of the process.”

Next word,

2. Pitch
Definition
a speech or act that attempts to persuade someone to buy or do something
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“We worked all night preparing our pitch for the clients the next day.”

And lastly,

3. Executive
Definition:
someone in a high position, especially in business, who makes decisions and puts them into action
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“The executive at our company has worked hard to get to the position he is at now.”

Scheme, pitch and executive! These are all words that you’ll be hearing in the workplace! What other phrases are commonly used? Well, I can start with “presentation”, which is a speech or talk in which a new product, idea, or piece of work is shown and explained to an audience. There’s “discussion”, which means to have a talk in order to make a decision or share ideas. There is also “schedule”, which is a plan for carrying out certain tasks at a specific time/date. Oh, and there’s also “progress”, which means how much work or development has been made towards an end goal. There are so many but these are some of the more common ones! I hope that helps!

Alright listeners, get those recordings in if you haven’t done so yet! Find me on Instagram at @hughtran_ to check out what I’m up to. Until the next episode, see ya!
