Intro:

It seems like a simple equation: effort = reward. The harder you work, the more you earn. Like many others, I was brought up believing that no matter what you choose to do, as long as you work hard at it and don’t give up, you will reap good rewards. What is your view on this? Let’s have a look at our pronunciation challenge first. To make sense of this sentence, you’ll need to watch our video of the day which explains why “working hard” is actually a scam.

Here is our sentence….

Sentence:
you can see that elite athletes typically devote less time early on to deliberate practice in the activity that they will eventually become experts in.

Pronunciation tips:

elite
athletes
typically
devote
deliberate
activity
eventually
experts

And now the whole sentence one more time.

Now, moving on to our three vocabulary words.

Vocabulary:
1. elite (adj.) 精英的 KK[ɪˋlit] IPA /iˈliːt/
Def: belonging to the richest, most powerful, best-educated, or best-trained group in a society.
Example:

David is a top student at his school and his goal is to get accepted into one of the elite colleges in the US.
David 是他學校的高材生,他的目標是被美國的精英大學錄取。

2. deliberate (adj.) 刻意的;故意的 KK[dɪˋlɪbərɪt] IPA /dɪˈlɪb.ɚ.ət/
Def: intentional or planned.

Example:
Deliberate practice always follows the same pattern and requires full engagement and high concentration.
刻意練習總是遵循相同的模式,需要全神貫注和高度專注

3.expert (n.) 能手;專家 KK[ˋɛkspɚt] IPA /ˈek.spɝːt/
Def: a person with a high level of skill or knowledge in a particular field.

Example:
We received some expert advice prior to purchasing our first real estate property.
在購買我們的第一個房地產之前,我們有得到一些專家建議。

Outro:

Our video of the day actually explains that genetics play a huge role in people’s learning abilities. Hard work is not the main factor in gaining success. Many people opt for a single source of income from a job and after ten years of hard work at the same job doing the same mundane tasks, they realize that the money they are making now is less than before due to inflation. With technological advancements, some people’s jobs are even getting replaced by AI robots.

The only constant in the universe is change and, especially as you get older, you have to embrace the change. A lot of people are afraid to step outside of their comfort zones but in fact, when you never do anything to push your body or mind, your brain will weaken and you will age quicker. There’s more to life than just work, get out there and learn a new skill, a new language. You’ll also meet new people along the way and when you engage with different people, you might acquire new ideas and these new ideas may one day come in handy and even nudge your career into the right direction.

I believe that working hard is still important, but it’s even more important to work smarter! Do you have any tips on how to work smarter? Leave a comment below and share with us! Okay, guys, it’s time for me to wrap up this episode and for you to give the pronunciation challenge a go. Thanks for listening and I’ll see you here again next week.
