“In a coma, you don't dream, you just hope that someone sits with you” - Conor Oberst
Good day everyone and welcome back to the Pronunciation Challenge. My name is Hugh and today I’ll be talking about the things that could happen to you if you never wake up. It’s a scary thought, isn’t it? What if you can’t wake up but can hear people around you? It’ll be like you’re trapped in your own body! There’s actually some things you can do to help a person recover from this. Some doctors say that even if the person in the coma does not respond to you that talking to them still helps. A lot of patients who were in a coma report saying that they still heard people speak. Do any of you listeners know anyone that was in a coma? Were any of you listeners in a coma yourself? Maybe you guys can share your experiences if you feel comfortable with them. As for myself, I think I shared this story before but I’ll tell it again after the featured sentence.
Today’s featured sentence:
A coma is the result of either a dysfunction of the RAS, or damage to both cerebral hemispheres.
I’ll say that again.
A coma is the result of either a dysfunction of the RAS, or damage to both cerebral hemispheres.
Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.
For the first word, we have
dysfunction
three syllables.
The first syllable, “DYS” just sounds like “is” but with a D in front. “FUNC” sounds like the word, “FUNK”, like funk music. “TION” is like any other “T I O N” sound. Dysfunction.
Next up, we have
Cerebral
Three syllables
With “CER”, ignore the C and just say it with an S sound instead. “RE” has a long E sound and “BRAL”, just imagine it being spelt “BRULL”. Cerebral.
Lastly, we have,
Hemispheres
Three syllables.
“HEM” has a short E sound. “MI” has a short i sound and “sphere” sounds like the word, “fear” like you’re afraid of something and say that with an S in front. Hemisphere.
Moving onto Vocabulary!
The first word is:
1. coma
Definition
a state in which a person is unconscious and cannot be woken, caused by damage to the brain after an accident or illness
Used in a sentence you could say,
“My friend was in a coma after his motorcycle accident.”
Next word,
2. Dysfunction
Definition
a problem or fault in a part of the body or a machine
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“The doctor said that the patient may be suffering from liver dysfunction.”
And lastly,
3. cerebral
Definition:
relating to the brain or the cerebrum
Used in a sentence, you could say:
“His poetry is very cerebral.”
Ok, so time for my story. It all happened when my friend suddenly collapsed at the gym. His heart just stopped and he needed those machines to bring him back to life. (It’s actually called a defibrillator). However, he was actually dead for 8 whole minutes. In those 8 minutes, he told me that he saw the back of a young girl leading him through a grassy field. He couldn’t see her face but he remembered her hair color. She was leading him to a big futuristic building and right before they got to the entrance, he woke up. He has an idea of who that little girl could be but I’ll just leave the story at that. I still get emotional talking about this story because this is actually a good friend of mine. Thank goodness he’s still here with us. I can’t imagine how much that would change a person after an experience like that.
Ok, I’m going to end it here for today. Make sure to get your recordings in if you haven’t done so. Give me a follow on Instagram if you want to see what I’m up to at hughtran_. Until next time, bye.

A coma is the result of either a dysfunction of the RAS, or damage to both cerebral hemispheres. This can happen in a number of ways.
◆ cerebral /səˈriːbrəl/ [ˋsɛrəbrəl] (adj.)大腦的;理性的,理智的;有智力的,用腦筋的
◆ coma [ˋkomə] (n.)昏睡(狀態),昏迷
◆ dysfunction [dɪsˋfʌŋkʃən] (n.)功能(官能)不良,功能(官能)障礙;功能失調,機能不良

☺A coma is the result of either a dysfunction of the RAS, or damage to both cerebral hemispheres.
昏迷的成因可能是腦部網狀激活系統的功能失常,或是大腦的左右半球都受損了。
【心得】以前常常做類似的夢,夢到自己是明明清醒卻怎麼樣都起不來的狀態,然後就會覺得很慌很害怕。
■coma [ˋkomə] (n.C)昏睡/昏迷(狀態)
■dysfunction [dɪsˋfʌŋkʃən] (n.C)功能失調;機能障礙;機能不良
■cerebral [ˋsəribrəl] or [ˋsɛrəbrəl] (adj.)大腦的;理智的;有智力的;用腦筋的
