Intro: Hello, VoiceTubers! Today, more and more people are aware of recycling. It didn’t use to be a popular idea back in the days when most people just threw everything out to the trash once it was used. However, people came to realize that by creating so much waste we quickly found ourselves out of resources and means to deal with the accumulated trash. One solution was to try and re-use materials so we don’t need to manufacture them again from scratch. Not every material can be re-used but many can. Plastic, glass, and wood or paper can be processed into new items. There are many creative ways of handling recycling. It doesn’t always have to mean reprocessing a product. It could also mean downgrading and reusing. For example, some companies buy old cell phones and sell them to developing countries. Remember that old Nokia phone you had? Or that first iPhone 4? They could be used in Africa right now. And that’s a great thing, it’s basically a win-win situation. You can sell an old product and get some money for it, the company who is buying it off of you is making some money, and the people in other third world countries get to have a cheap and working device. Big recycling projects are usually handled by big companies or by the government. So it seems like there is not much say in this for the average person. But in fact, there are many ways we can help in protecting the environment. Let’s discuss some of them after we’ve watched this week’s video.
Sentence: The tiles can be sanded and assembled into furniture, and also cut into smaller products like coasters, or even domino pieces. Pronunciation Tips: tile assemble coaster
Vocabulary: 1. tile KK[taɪl] IPA//taɪl/ n. 瓦片;瓷磚 a thin, usually square or rectangular piece of baked clay, plastic, etc. used for covering roofs, floors, walls, etc. v. 給… 貼瓷磚 to cover a wall or floor with tiles Example: We are going to re-tile the bathroom this weekend.
2. assemble KK[əˋsɛmb!] IPA//əˈsem.bəl/ v. 組裝 to make something by joining separate parts v. 集合,聚集;收集 to come together in a single place or bring parts together in a single group Example: The students are assembled outside by the school gate, getting ready to go on their field trip.
3. coaster KK[ˋkostɚ] IPA//ˈkoʊ.stɚ/ n. 杯墊 a small piece of wood, plastic, or other material that you put a glass or cup on to protect a surface from heat or liquid n. 船隻 a ship that sails between ports along a coast Example: Hang on, the coffee is really hot. Let me get you a coaster to protect the wooden table. Outro: There are many ways to protect our environment. All we need is to put in a little bit more effort, and perhaps develop some simple daily habits. For example, we can conserve energy by making sure the lights are turned off when leaving a room in the house. Or by taking shorter showers. We can drive a smaller engine-sized car, buy just enough food to avoid excess waste, and buy new clothes in moderation. Also through proper recycling, by making sure we separate our trash and recyclable items, or if you have something that you no longer need but is still in good condition, you can gift it or sell it to someone who may need it. Do you have any good ideas on how we can keep the environment clean and sustainable? If you are one of our listeners from Japan, maybe you can share what recycling is like in your hometown? I’ve heard that most households take recycling very seriously. Please share with us in the comments! Thanks for tuning in and see you again next week!
